Buying 16610LN need help / advice....
First post on the forum, been lurking for years. My 40th birthday is in 10 days and my wife has suprised me with "I want to get you that watch you have been wanting for 6 yrs". Yay
She had to tell me ahead of time because she knew she would need my help to tell her just what I wanted and how to acquire it. I have weighed all purchasing options over the years that I have been obsessing(including TRF trusted sellers ), tried on everything I like at stores (new and pre-owned),etc. etc. I have concluded the route I am most comfortable with for various personal reasons is Bob's Watches or Bernard Watch for my 16610LN Box and Papers. Both dealers offer a three day return policy. Here is the question: If it is coming from Bob's or Bernards do I need to have it authenticated by my local Rolex AD? If so is there enough time to do that and have it returned in 3 days? (Don't know how long AD would need it for). When a jeweller authenticates a watch do they verify the movement as part of the process? Any other "do's or don'ts" as my wife and I embark on this? Thanks for your input, God willing I will be offically joining the club in 10 days!!! |

I bought mine through a trusted seller and didn't have to go thru any of that. These guys have been selling here for years with lots of references. You Obviously don't trust Bobs or Bernards because you are taking it to a jeweler to be authenticated. I bought mine here it was in my hands the next day. These guys are honest as it gets. Just my thoughts good luck with your purchase.

Buy the seller first. If they don't have your trust they don't get your money.

Words of wisdom there. If you can't trust that it's real, find another seller. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There's a trusted seller forum for a reason. None of them want to jeaorpadize their reputations or future sales by selling one person a bad/fake Rolex. Go to an AD, you'll sleep better at night.

I agree you buy the seller. They seem reputable. And you are paying for their store front and reputation. Reducing your risk... But unless I bought directly from an AD, I would have it authenticated. You can pay with a credit card or pay pal( so you pay an extra 3%) Piece of mind ... I would think the 1st thing someone would check is the movement or maybe the crystal with a loupe. But the movement is key. Find someone in advance of the purchase. Ask them how long they need. Probably not that long.

There is no "trusted seller forum". Anyone can pay their $25 and sign up here to sell watches. Due diligence is required when selecting your seller, and the watches they have on sale.

We are on a tight timeline because my wife would like to present the watch to me on my actual birthday. In addition, she wants to do the leg work to feel that "she got it for me". Bob's or Bernard will be much easier for her to navigate than trying to figure the in's and out's of a forum that she knows nothing about. Don't know why I spent all that space defending our decision but at the end of the day I think I would want to authenticate any pre-owned regardless of the source. Just curious what other opinions/experiences have been with the authenticaiton process. |

Never had to get a watch authenticated (all purchased new from AD except the 1 vintage I have from a known seller). This I a guess on my part, but I would think that any AD with a good watch maker or RSC could check authenticity if needed. Should be fairly simple. If an AD can regulate and pressure check while customers wait I assume it would take about the same time to authenticate?

It's a big b-day. Save the hassle and go to an AD. It will save time and it seems you will sleep better. I would not purchase from someone if I felt I had to get a watch authenticated. I would feel comfortable buying from a number of sellers on here.

If you decide yo use a person who sells on TRF's FS section, do your due diligence.
1) Look in the Buyers/Sellers Who's Who section first http://www.rolexforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=28 2) Some sellers guarantee 100% authenticity in their ads.

as a bday present, i would go with a brand new watch from a AD, or forumdealer. Never a used one.

It is your watch and birthday. I can understand the wife thing believe me. I just thought it would be easier to do it the way I did it. You want memories about her giving you the watch that is cool and I can respect that. You need to do what ever makes it work for you two to remember your birthday. How ever you end up doing it I wish you the best and a Happy Birthday and Happy Holidays to yours. Good luck and remember we are here if you have questions. |
