Long time lurker new member newbie question I haven't really seen answered. Quick history I have a Oyster Perpetual two tone small Roman dial - I am the proud original owner purchased in 2002 - recently my father in law passed away he owned a Day Date he bought new in 1980 - circa 1978 based on SN - while helping my Mother in law to sell it I realized I might as well buy it - I get a great deal and she got more $$. Of course now I have the bug! Was serviced about 2 years ago - I recall there was moisture under the crystal. Here is my question(s)

I cannot tell if the dial is original or replaced and if replaced is it Rolex or after market and is it original to the watch?

Been thinking of replacing the hands - should I?

Thank you, that was what I thought - I believe the original had damage due to moisture and was replaced - I know he used a reputable source for service but not AD - can you tell me is it official Rolex and just not original to the Watch or is it pure after market? If after market - should I have hands replaced?

I think Crowncollection confirmed what I suspect - but here you go can you tell if at least official Rolex dial? I saw on another post about dials but said "invalid purchase"

No it is not a an original Rolex dial it has aftermarket diamonds added

Dear Tim:

First of all, welcome to the club! That is a nice Day Date you have, specially because of the sentimental value. Although the dial looks not original (for the reasons commented before), a lot of people in your situation might keep the watch that way because of its history and meaning to you. If so, service it with an independent watchmaker as Rolex might (or will not) service it. On the hands, I think they match the watch, replacing them will make the hands 'pop', but as with all watch-issues, it is personal taste.

Rolex will not work on anything aftermarket and they will not allow their independents with parts accounts to work on them either. Through Rolex you would have to buy a dial and have the watch serviced for them to do anything with it. Likely any parts you had installed two years ago when it was serviced are aftermarket.
If you interest is to make it original again the dials are easy to find and not that expensive. Once you source an original dial an independent watchmaker with a parts account will likely agree to work on it, swap the dial and replace anything needed with genuine Rolex parts. This is the most cost effective way to go.

Or wear it as is and enjoy. :)

Thank you guys - going to keep as is. I have box and papers so I know it was original when purchased in April, 1980. Wish father in law was still here rather have him than the watch for sure. He used a reputable jeweler who specializes in pre owned Rolex - I believe the face was always black - I recall something about the service and the jeweler replacing dial for free due to the water damage having to do with bad seal after he serviced it. Runs perfectly and has kept excellent time for the month or so I've had it. We found it in a sock in a closet going through his stuff - he had thought it was stolen or that my mother in law sold it on him - he must of just hidden it - would have been awesome if we found it while he was still around and he could have enjoyed it a few more years.

In any event - it's going to be treated well, appreciated and go to a grand kid one day waaaay in the future
