Explorer wears larger than its 39 mm size. I'm partial to the Explorer, but it's amazingly comfortable and goes with everything. I certainly would not want a leather strap getting wet day in and day out.

I would take the explorer.
But go with what you want. And it sounds like what you want is the panerai.
You're going to be the one wearing it, so enjoy it.

I own a Pam 112 and a GMT Master II 16710 Coke. I love my Pam and get tons of compliments, but it's a ding magnet. The GMT sits close on my wrist and stays out of the way so I wear it more often. That said I think the Explorer I is a good choice in a practical sense and it dresses up really well. A Pam is a Pam though and go with a 44mm all the way. Bottom line in my opinion, you can't go wrong with either.

BTW if you go with the Pam you're gonna go nuts with straps. So far I have 6 and still going. It's very addictive!!!!

I am a big Panerai fan. Try a 005. You can pick up a preowned for around $4000 and you will love it.

I've tried on and seriously considered an Exp I, also very seriously considered a PAM 233.

In the end, realized I generally liked having the date on a watch, so Exp was out.

Still thinking about Panerai.

I'd say PAM.
