Will an AD charge to authenticate a watch?

My AD authenticated for free. An insurance appraisal at the same AD is $150.

That's a question you will have to ask the AD.

I will say that most AD's are not capable of "authenticating" a Rolex, they are sales staff with no training in identifying an authentic Rolex or any other watch they sell.

If they have a watchmaker on staff, he/she may be able to give a cursory affirmation, but to actually "authenticate" they will have to take it apart.

To expect the watchmaker to take the time and labor for this for free is like asking you to come in on Sunday and work a couple of hours for free.

This is the best advice and explanation

One way to check easily, not absolutely 100% but if you can record in slow mo using a DSLR or iPhone 6, there should be 8 ticks in one second for Rolex movements (28800 BPH).

A little off topic, but $150 is ridiculous.

The fakes have this figured out, so it's not a reliable way to tell anymore.

Mine came with it for free, at lindquist and beckstead. Try them. They also give you 4 lines of engraving, for free.

My AD provided me with a no cost appraisal at purchase and a revised appraisal many years later upon verification that I did, in fact, purchase it from them.
