Incredible

Has anybody heard that during WW2 Rolex sales reps where selling Rolex watches to POW British officers in german captivity? Since they where in POW camps, and had no money to pay for the watch, they were allowed to take the watch and pay at war end. I guess the British Officer word was all that Rolex needed.

Yes, that was posted here about a year ago as one of the watches from "The Great Escape" was up for auction.

As an anology, Dunhill did a similar thing under the Great War (WW I). Dunhill pipes were sent to the officers at the French front, at no charge. Unfortunately, some soon found out that expensive Dunhill pipes were sent to France, so many of them were stolen. Dunhill solved this by shipping the pipes in barrels stating "Castor Oil" on them. That helped!

The rumour went from mouth to mouth, soon making Dunhill pipes the preferred pipe brand not just among officiers but also among regular soldiers that tended to use the socalled "Army Mount" pipe (mouthpiece easily taken of and pipe then put in the trousers without it risking to break whilst jumping in and out of the trenches).

After the war, many officers chose to PAY for the pipe they had received for free.
