Other brands with similar prestige as Rolex?
What other brands do you group as being equal to Rolex in quality, prestige, name-awareness, etc? "The Rolex of..." so to speak.
A few that come to my mind: Baccarat Crystal Cohiba Bang and Olufsen Apple Hermes Harley Davidson |

In name awareness, I'm not sure it has many rivals. Perhaps coca cola or Nike.

Sorry but being a person who is fairly passionate about the shoes he wears I just couldn't help but say something. Although you two may have had good experiences with Loake and Allen Edmonds these two brands generally do not tend to equate to the solid reputation that Rolex has. Allen Edmonds does tend to be rather well known and pretty popular, however their quality control just doesn't measure up. Although its possible to get shoes without issues its also very possible to get some that do. Everybody makes mistakes but Allen Edmonds tends to make them more than most. I tend to believe it's because they produce such a large volume of shoes. However their customer service will be more than willing to replace your shoes even if it takes 3 if not more times to get it right. Loake has a few lines of shoes of which the 1880 Line is the only one that tends to get recommended because their other lines tend to be made in India and potentially other locations besides England where the labor and materials tend to be a lot cheaper. So I personally would not equate either of these brands to the prestige that Rolex has been able to garner. I would however probably consider brands like Edward Green or John Lobb which are not as well known as Rolex but are certainly known for their prestige in the shoe world. Their are of course other brands as well such as Gaziano and Girling but in its case it is so relatively new and although a great brand just doesn't have the prestige that an Edward Green or John Lobb has even though they make shoes that are just as good as either of the other two brands. By the way Tim when thinking of my list I wanted to make sure I mentioned CRK. Although I've decided to get another Rockstead instead of something else from CRK, CRK certainly belongs here.

The caché of Rolex is seldom paralleled in other categories.
I mean the assumptions that a casual observer make about the owner. When someone says, "he wears a Rolex" a waterfall of traits are ascribed to you. We know the reasons for the brand - and that perhaps some brands like Patek eclipse Rolex - but we make no broad assumptions about the owner. In other areas, few brands bring such awareness. Perhaps Rolls Royce, Dom Perignon, Formula1... Not saying those are "the best" - just that people paint a picture of those who associate with the brand. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well in actuality for the category of Ready to Wear Shoes they are probably more closely aligned with Patek than Rolex. Given that they are considered Top Tier Shoemakers, the amount they make, and the amount of handwork that goes into their product. True the Good Year Welting and other things are machine work but there is still a lot of hand work that goes into these shoes. But these brands certainly do deliver and for shoemakers they are fairly well known brands with a great and long tradition.

Pretty hard to equate Rolex to other brands.

I equate Bose speakers to Rolex. MOST People that don't know much about watches or speakers, think they're both the best of the best. Nothing wrong with either of these brands of course, but they're NOT the best of the watch and speaker world.

I agree this is A little funny and silly post different industries cannot be compared to that of you watch industry. Coke is iconic but not in the same way the same thing with Mercedes in the car industry iconic but different.

btw, I forgot to include this particular product in my previous listing & it comes the closest to a quality high-end timepiece in terms of exceptional durability, accuracy, & mechanical excellence...a Nagra reel-to-reel tape deck! they're expensive, all mechanical, made in Switzerland & frequently used in those National Geographic documentaries to capture the call of the wild. probably the most accurate portable tape deck ever made. |
