Las Vegas rip off at AD??

Well wasn't at a Rolex AD, but high end watch store in Vegas had the following two watches in stock, So I asked the prices.
1 - Black SS Daytona
2 - Panera 249.
Both were BNIB.
on the SS, I asked first, "Did you just get that? and why is it still in the window?
He replied, " Well, that watch is $15,000"
I was floored they were asking that much.
So, at the back of the store, they had 3 Panerai, Not a Panny AD either.
Sitting there was a 249.
I asked the price on that on.
He gave me a long song & dance about how rare it is Blah blah blah, then said $20,000

He was out of his mind asking those prices.
You can get either of those for much less than that.
The 249, you could have for $13k without too much effort.

Then he tries selling me other items in the case, Yeah right.

Sadly, several of the retailers here in Vegas tend to charge a bit more than average. Sorry, it sounds as if you encountered one.

In a town where people have no conscience dropping $500 on a $35.00 bottle of Vodka to sit at a table they paid an additional $100+ to get, inflation on some of the luxury items reach what I call "Tourist Prices".

Rule of thumb is, people come to Vegas to live excessively any how, so charge accordingly.

They do this in Northern Michigan as well. The wealth in the Summer here makes Beverly Hills, CA look like paupersville. The truly wealthy expect to be gouged. I saw a Ferrari F430 Convertible from Florida here today. Only $228,000 starting price looked like chump change to this guy. Pity, he drove it slower than I drive normally. It sure made an awesome sound.

The old, old money have Summer cottages here on Lake Michigan (Normal size 10,000 square feet plus). They sit on their Summer porches and drink mint juleps.

The Chicago to Mackinac Sailboat race has been going on here for 100 years and is scheduled to start July 19th. Life is truly grand for some.

I doubt a mint julep can be properly enjoyed north of the Mason-Dixon line

I suppose he is banking on someone that has just had a big win come into his store to buy. That doesn't make his pricing policy Ok though.

$15,000 for the SS Daytona?.. if it makes ya feel better, I'll take $13,000 for mine, I'll even hand deliver it to you.

My point exactly.
Too bad I wasn't wearing my 249, I would have sold it to him on the spot for $15k

My guess is, there are people who "hear" about these watches, and IF they win, they just plunk down the cash.

Yeah. You're probably right. They probably are drinking some other snooty concoction.

i just hate the 'snob' factor at some AD's. whenever i get the chance to rub their face in it, i do, and encourage others to do so....that having been said, Las Vegas is a place where high rollers do walk into a watch dealer on a fairly regular basis and just say, 'wrap it up.' amazing. i really do understand your feelings of resentment, however.
best,
dan

I think it was PT Barnum who said "a sucker is born every minute". Sad but someone will probably buy those watches at those prices.
