I have a very nice film system( Canon EOS 50,battery grip,28-135 IS,Canon 70-300,Tamron SP 90 Macro and Sigma EX 17-35,Canon EX 420 flash) Currently I use my wifes Canon A540 for dig pics.I feel it now tme for me to get my own dig camera.I am tired of a whole bag of "stuff" and want a all in one package that "delivers".For myself wideangle range is more important than tele shots..

I have narrowed the field to the following,for various reasons ...

Panasonic FZ18
Leica V-LUX 1
Leica D-Lux 3
Fuji S100 SF
Nikon P80
Canon D450 + 18-55 (As a complete system ~ no extra lenses,flash etc intended)

I will sell my current kit as funding.

Your input will be greatly appreciated

I have had the the Leica D-Lux 3 for about 4 months does the job for me

Canon 450D! Keep some of your lenses, they should work, yes? I had a EOS film camera and was able to use the lenses when I moved to digital.

The 28-135 IS will work,he Canon 70-300USM also,the problem is the 1.6x conversion with the smaller than 35mm size sensor on Canon's digSLRs(Except the D5,but thats too expensive).For my purpose I would use the 18-55 IS or upgrade to a 17-85 USM IS.I am concerned about the focus speed of the non-USM 18-55 lens.

I've got a Nikon D70 which is my main camera and I love it.

But I just got a Canon Powershot SD790 IS that is incredible. It's got just about every shooting mode you can think of, including an ISO of 3200.

D70 is a discontinued camera. D80 took it's place about a year and a half ago. If you go Nikon D40x/D60/D80/D300/D700/D3 is the progression of current bodies.
Since you have Canon lenses 450D/40D/5D MKII (replacement eventually, not announced yet, who know when way overdue)

Well, in the US the 5D is getting cheap. Likely due to a replacement that is rumored to be announced at Photokina. I think we can get the 5D for $1881 from Amazon. That's a hell of a camera for that price. It might even be cheaper in Asia.

I own a Nikon D70 that I kept after buying my 5D ~2 yrs ago. The 5D is an astounding piece of equipment. It's shocking to think that it was released nearly 3 years ago.

I think you need to decide between either Cannon or Nikon.

Cannon: Entry level DSLRs (450D,40D) have superb image quality especially at higher ISO settings relative to Nikon. Lens choices are less (under the Cannon name) and tend to be pricey.

Nikon: Pro and Semi pro level DSLRs are easily on par with Cannon's Pro and Semi pro bodies. Nikon offers a wider array of lens choices relative to Cannon. Nikon's high end glass is unmatched.


Since you appear to be looking at entry level DSLRs, I'd go with the 450D especially since you may have some compatible lenses already.

I guess whats keeping me back is the wish for Canon to launch a 400/1000/450 pricepoint DSLR that has a 35mm size sensor.Thats all I need,because then my EX420 flash and my beloved Canon IS 28-135 will be my complete kit.With the smaller sensored cameras my 28-135 becomes practically useless,because the focal length increases.The only one they have now is the D5 with the full size sensor.Thats expensive and to be replaced soon.Perhaps its worthwhile looking for one at a great price,then that becomes a viable option.

Sipho, if you do get the kit lens for the 450 as mentioned in your first post here, you will have an equivalent of 28mm if my calculations are correct, and it will also have IS to boot. On the other hand, you will unfortunately lose the wide angle of the Sigma.

I can see where you're coming from, but I think you're losing a lot more by getting rid of your current kit, rather than keeping the accessories and getting another wide-angle lens later.

Whenever Canon releases the 5D replacement (long overdue since the 5D was released close to 3 years ago) It will likely cost in the neighborhood of $3000 USD. You can get a good deal on used 5Ds now or new ones at about $1800 USD but I think a 450D is a better buy now.

I am a Nikon guy myself. However, since you have so much Cannon stuff you may want to stay loyal.

I have had the D80 since the day it was released. I had the D70 prior to that. I think the D80 is an outstanding camera. But now that the D300 is out, I am considering trading in on that, mostly for the increased screen size!

Rumor is that the D80 replacement will be announced at Photokina in Sept. Might be worth waiting to see. Also, the D700 is a heck of a camera. Depends how much DX-specific glass you have though.

I think its long overdue,for the likes of Canon and Nikon to launch a 35mm size sensored entry/mid range SLR.The same holds true for film and digital.The larger the photosensitive surface area,the better.

As a matter of interest,for some nostalgia .... My best "kit" was an Olympus system.OM-4 and OM-2n,with winders and a whole Zuiko lens kit ~ 24/50/100/200/35-70 etc. Took some excellent B+W portraits,with the 100mm and Ilford film.The framed enlargements all over my house,against the walls.Loved that OM-4

PS: Also had the poor mans Hasselblad .. Mamiya C220.Very sharp lenses !!

That would pretty much be the 5D, with the 1D being on the pricier side of town. Given the 300D was 2 grand when it was first released, the range operates on a sliding scale these days.

Well, seeing as how the Nikon D700 is ~$2,999 street... Canon isn't pressed to do much with pricing with the new 5D. But if they do... look out!
