Buying used

I purchased my Submariner new in 2009 (V serial number) and have been very happy with it. Yesterday my wife and I were passing by a Rolex store and I shouldn't have went inside but I did. Now I want a two tone blue faced Submariner. I was talking with the salesman and he said my watch looked new and I could probably get what I paid for it if I sold it. Now my wheels are turning except the new watch retails for $13,400 and that's out of my price range. I stumbled across this site and am considering buying a used one (preferably no more than a year or two old) but I normally don't buy anything used yet alone a Rolex. With that said, what are the average savings of purchasing a watch like this used vs new? I'm also considering the Submariner with the green face and dial but they didn't have any at the store.

From what I've seen/remember the 116613's on the used market are around $9,500 (asking price). So in this case about $4,000 of savings.

Submariner with green face 116610LV, also called the Hulk, goes new for $8325 brand new from reliable TRF dealers.

You can get at least 20% off new and unworn Blue Sub TTs from trusted sellers here like Davidsw. Do some research, do not ever pay close to retail for a two tone.

Hey, I should be getting mine tomorrow too. If you buy it from a trusted seller, it could still even be BNIB at around 25% off RRP...

WatchRecon is a good place to find used watches. It consolidates several used watch sources. Just remember to 'buy the seller' before you buy the watch. There are many good trusted sellers, but there will always be someone out there trying to scam someone. There is a sub forum here to help you determine who is a trusted seller with good feedback.

Welcome. Do a search on Trusted Sellers here and then go to the FS section and see what is available and within your price range. On a trade you should be 2500-3500 off on your SS for TT. I would consider doing some research and seeing if another model appeals to you. I am not a big fan of TT but have owned several over the years. The blue sub in TT is stunning but if it is to be an only watch I might consider black.

Thanks for the input everyone. The funny thing is that I was totally happy with mine until I walked in the store yesterday. I'm usually not much of a gold person myself but something about the two tone with the blue really looked nice. I am a little worried that it might be to (look at me) compared to my plain Submariner. They had a really nice blue and silver one there but it was white gold which was crazy expensive. I just noticed one of the reputable sellers on here is from Houston, this could make it easy.

Perhaps a white gold Sub (they call it Smurf) would be a better choice to avoid the bling, but that one is even more expensive than the TT you were looking at. I suggest you take your time and think about it hard before flipping; perhaps saving for a second Rolex is a better choice versus flipping your like new Sub.

No they only call it a smurf by some on Internet forums.

Funny how that works...lesson learned, never go in a store, and most importantly, do not hang around here.

Depends on your relationship with your AD. If you have a good one you may not save a whole lot preowned, especially the case in Canada right now.

Both are great choices (I have both).

Don't forget sales tax!!!! Buying used saves on that.

Keep the sub. I have the 116613 as well (and love it) but today I'm wearing my "plain" sub.

I have bought 4 "pre owned" as they like to call them. Usually save about 20-30%

If you take your time, do your research and can find a good rebuttable seller you would be surprised as to what you can find at fairly reasonable prices (for Rolex anyways) just my experience.

No "average" per se...given the various degrees of condition / box / papers / seller reputation, it's really all over the map.

Start pricing models in the classified section here to get ideas.

No issues here buying pre-owned as long as you do your research and always buy the seller first before the watch itself.

Heck, I'm from Asia, yet, I've purchased several watches already from the trusted sellers here who are most, if not all, from CONUS.

99% of the time, it's delivered to a friend or relative located at CONUS and then it's hand carried to me in Asia.

There was only one instance where it was Fedex'ed. That was a gamble but was lucky it went through without any hitches. But, I had to meet the package at once at FedEx's main facility in our territory. Didn't wait for it to be delivered.

Used is the only way to go - new from AD you take a bath and loose 20-30%, the rest of us buy used and generally don't loose much if any money if you decide to let it go later.

Don't know about that, looks like a lot of members buy new. Personally I much prefer new even if it cost me some.
