I purchased my first Rolex in November of 2007 after many years of seeing my Mom wear one (SS/gold first, then gold president later) and my younger brother having a beautiful SS/gold Datejust for about the last 10 years or so. I decided on the SS Sub Date as I felt that it represented my personality the best and it really smiled to me. This was also after reading many different articles here and the Rolex Reference Page. I had considered an Omega Seamaster, but ultimately it was the Rolex that I wanted.

Fast forward several months and mine and my wife's fifth wedding anniversary is upcoming. I had really wanted to get her a new watch not only because I thought it would be a great gift, but also because of my new found interest in watches. I particularly wanted to get her a Rolex because I consider them one of the best watches available. She was very hesitant at first and did not want to spend that kind of money on a watch for herself.

About two weeks ago, she told me that she had lost her old watch and didn't know what had happened to it. It was an Accutron gold tone watch, nothing special, but she had worn it since high school graduation (about 12 years). I knew this was my chance to get her the watch that I wanted to get her and now she was in the position of actually needing a watch. I know what you are thinking and no, I did not hide her watch from her. Very convenient, I will agree though.

We had looked at many watches and early she thought that she might like a Tag Heuer or maybe also an Omega. I told her that those watches are fine watches, but for the money, you can't beat a Rolex. She is very adament that she does not like the jubilee bracelet or the fluted bezel. So, we were looking for a SS/gold watch with oyster bracelet and domed bezel. It seems as if these are not quite as popular as the alternative combination, but we managed to find one that she fell in love with while we were on vacation in Destin, FL.

McCaskill and Company in Destin had a beautiful Lady Datejust with oyster bracelet and domed bezel with white dial and diamond markers (Yes, can you believe that a woman would want diamond markers?). Oh well, if that is what she wants, that is what she will get. After asking the salesperson at the AD in Destin what type of discount they may offer, I was told that this is not a used watch and they are an Authorized Dealer and therefore discounts are frowned upon. I was immediately turned off by his snooty attitude. I did however make note that this was the watch that my wife had fallen in love with.

After a recent trip to my local AD, the same one where I had purchased my Sub Date, I was told that I could order the same watch and would receive a 10% discount. I had hoped for a little more, but told her that I would think about it and call her back. I waited another day to verify that this was in fact what my wife wanted for her anniversary and she confirmed that it was. I went back yesterday to tell them to go ahead and send for the watch, and while I was there I added my name to the waiting list for a SS Daytona.

I will post pics of her watch as soon as it arrives, but in the meantime here are two photos of my watch and my brothers taken in Florida. I will have to get a pic of my Mom's watch sometime as well.

Good stuff, I'm sure she will love it. I am excited to hear her reaction when it is finally on her wrist. I have often mentioned getting my wife a nice watch but she could care less, she is just not into watches.

....great consideration for your wife. I KNOW she will love her watch.

....now, we ALL KNOW what happened to her accutron....

....my wife is a bit of a clutz and is afraid to wear her DJ....I ALWAYS have to pressure her to wear it when we go out or on a trip. And yes.....she is hard on all her jewelry....seems like I am always taking something in for repair.

Congrats on a great watch. After i bought my first Rolex, I wanted my wife to have a wonderful timepiece. She didn't like the looks of Rolex watches so she decided on a Tag. She loves the watch and since then we've purchased her a Cartier Santos.

I think it's a great gesture and you both are lucky to have one another. Happy Anniversary to you both and thanks for sharing your story.
