Not true on depreciation, it is a wasting asset, always going down.

On the second point, I never said 5 CARS, I said I have 4 other choices to drive everyday.
The wife has her Jeep Cherokee trailhawk, and I also have a Ram 1500 truck, a 16 Harley Road Glide, and a 15 Polaris slingshot.

and for off road a 15 Polaris RZR4 1000

Is this a form of "mental accounting" bias?

Thanks for the laugh

Yeah, truly wealthy people buy mega yachts. None of this plebeian automotive conversation. No need for a car when you have a driver at your disposal.

And OP, all due respect, I don't mean to talk about your finances....

BUT, from what I can tell, you can buy the Platona without thinking twice about the finances.

I gave them 6k up front as multiple security deposits which save me about 10% a month on a my payment and I get the money back at the end of the lease. Where else can you make 10% interest that easy. No maintenance, no hassle, and way less depreciation because of the low money factor, and I don't care about the residual value cause I will get a new car in 3 years :) I reckon on your Benz you would have spent less than the depreciation you have encountered...and had more money for the watch!

I did this. Major winning 👏🏻👏🏻

No problem at all, I often wonder about putting too much info out here on the WORLD WIDE WEB, but you all seem to be a pretty cool group.

I guess I should clarify, The Platona was being used just as a number reference as to how much my stinking car has lost in value. Its putting a tangible asset on the deprecation of the car. But the truth is, that would not be my first choice in a watch, it would be the SMURF, I just love the WG and blue dial. It would go well with my new Hulk, thanks again DavidSW, trusted seller.
I just look to rationalize everything, and try to make it make sense.

Sometimes I am just minding my own business, and my mind attacks me.

Anyways, I never mind anybody's inputs as long as they are honest and well intended.

PS. now I can think about Smurf, D-Blue, and still be way ahead. Oh and a Daytona C if and when

Dude, I am right there with you. I am the king of rationalization. And I really can justify nearly anything. I keep getting better with practice.

Friend of mine went to the casino with me and my wife.
He lost about a thousand euros. His response was I didn't loose cause I got a 50% discount on a new couch I bought today so I'm still up a thousand.

Thats about the same conclusion as OP's post. (Sorry OP but thats just my two cents on it)

Here is how my simple plan works.
I was shopping for a new car this weekend, as my current car is just over 3 years old. I was thinking, do I really need a new car when the one I have has only 19,000 miles on it? I still love it and really no reason other than I usually get a new car every 2 or 3 years.
But here are the true numbers on my current car.
Paid over $130,000 in 2013 including taxes. I do not lease nor take any notes out on cars.
Car would book out today at maybe $60,000, and more like $55,000, costing me roughly 65,000 in depreciation. Damn, 65,000 would of bought a Platona and even maybe a new D-sea as well.
So it kind of makes sense not to make this mistake over and over again, and just enjoy a nice car for 5 or 6 years.

Does this seem to make sense, cause it does to me.

Bottom line for me, maybe keep cars a bit longer and enjoy more watches for free.
This post just underscored that after about $3500 a month, it really does not matter any more what you earn. You'll always want more. The more you earn, the more expensive the car, the bigger the house, but the issues remain the same.

Is this a math riddle, if so, The answer is--the couch's original price was 4000 EUROS . See my mind attacking me again and figuring this out

When my wife orders clothing online and then returns it, she considers the refund proceeds to be "free money" for some reason.

True timing is everything, and while my previous E550 was also not an SL MB still had the MSD which many don't know about and also gave a sweet deal, I know lease prices on the 100k+ cars become a but tougher but still might be cheaper than the loss due to depreciation...

There is some good logic here if you really think about it.

I think we are all pretty smart business people or most would not even be on this forum, but my Achilles heal has always been cars, the worst big ticket item to buy.

If I switch that sickness to watches, I will be way better off.

And don't feel bad for me having an older car, I still have 5 choices everyday of what to drive to work.

Just stick to buying specialty low production Porsches and Ferrari's and you'll make money on the resale to pay for the platona...

Wouldn't the depreciation be more than $65k then?

Not sure how the math works here...

I read this thread & it was interesting.....

Daytona & SL, great combo...

They are timeless if you keep it well......

I guess your logic does work if you stick to the plan for the next 20 years......

I start off keeping my SL for over 20 years & well I end up with some of those goodies......

With all those years of keeping my ride I could get a Daytona C anytime....

I started doing an occasional consulting gig on the side for a bit of extra loot. It won't likely be much, a few thousand a year, but it's easy money and I'm earmarking it for the watch fund. It could also open the door to some other much more lucrative work in the future. Then it will be renamed the Ferrier Fund.
I don't understand all this smoke and mirrors, slight of hand money mumbo jumbo.
If you choose not to get a new S Class and keep yours for another 3 or 4 years and use the money you would have spent on a Platona instead, you didn't get a free Daytona, you paid for it. You had 70k in your checking account one day, the next day DavidSW had it in his. Sounds like you paid for the Daytona to me. But I'm not a magician, just an old country doctor.

True on depreciation, I was just making a dumb joke . Also I just thought you had 5 exotics after I saw some pics you posted. Not a bad thing to think though!

Get the Platona. Drive the SL for 4 yrs instead of 3 and call it compromise

My 2 cents

I was going back and forth over 2 recent job offers - i took the job which offered $75K more than the other offer - so in essence - i got myself a free platona!!

Ignore this, seems like utter jealousy. From the beginning of this this post, to each his own. My uncle recently sold his string of Independent Pharmacies in the North-East area, to a major corporation for over $10 million. He doesn't wear expensive watches or drive fancy cars. He thinks my watches are totally waste of money. But he does take very expensive vacations and jet sets around the world. That is his only vice.

Yeah. I am a sucker for new cars also.

Biggest waste of $ in my life.

If you stay away from BNIB PM Rolex, collecting Rolex is pretty cheap by comparison. SS sports model kind of maintains its value also.

Most 20 year old car is not worth much. You'll get something out of a 20 year old Rolex.

Agree with buying limited production cars eg any Porsche GT cars. You can essentially drive them for free if you keep the mileage low.
