You're going to pay a premium for something so inconsequential, it's almost laughable.

Buy a 16710 with a bad 3185 movement for $1500. Then buy a NOS 3186 movement for $2500. Give it to your favorite watchmaker to assemble, pressure test, and regulate.

Boom, you have your 3186 calibre 16710 for ~$4400 after labor.

I always wondered what makes the 3816 so special?? I heard it is more desirable, but why? I have 2 GMTs, both 16710 (pepsi and root beer) with 3815 and so far they have worked fine.

Nothing. It's more desirable because marketing creates that impression. Buyers either decide to believe or look at it for what it is, marketing.

All Sub or SD without COMEX written on the dial work fine too ... but some prefer to pay 50k$ or more premium to have COMEX written

The same apply to fat four or not fat four 16610LV, or even red and double red inscriptions on some dials.

Nobody say it's logical, but it's the way the market works. "Internet hype" isn't the subject.

Collectors love rarity. Personally I would be more than happy with a 3185.

Have to agree the internet is a wonderful place for Rolex hype to drive prices up to those who are willing to pay the very inflated price for a slight movement mod.
