I would go for the 39mm Explorer.

It's a bit more modern size-wise and the brushed bracelet makes it better to wear with everything, it's less formal and you can beat it all day without it showing it.

It's brand new so it won't change for a while, not that Rolex changes watches very often though...

Try them both on and see for yourself.

I have both the 114270 and the 116200 and I like them both very much. It's a very hard choice, as they both have a lot going for them.

They are very similar, yet very different and equally rugged.

It's entirely a matter of choice. The Explorer is more sporty, while the DJ is more dressy, but either would work for dressy occasions.

I just saw the 214270 for the first time the other day. Personally, I prefer the 114270, but I can see the appeal of the 214270.

It's larger size brings the Explorer more into line with the other watches in the professional series. Just looking at the watch in the case with the Explorer II, the Subs, and the GMTs, you can see plainly that the 214270 is in its element.

On the wrist, it has a definite presence that the 114270 or the 116200 cannot match. The watch dominated my 7.67" wrist. It will certainly appeal to the younger crowd who has practically grown up with the larger watches, yet it does not have the proportion of watches that will look grotesque in a few years as fashion changes.

Which ever you choose, you won't go wrong, but I can almost assure you that which ever you choose, you will not be satisfied and will as soon as you are able, buy yourself another Rolex and then another and on and on.

You're starting young, so there's a lot to look forward to.

If you want a date feature and many dial options go with the DJ. If not, the EXP is a classic.

Between the two, I would take the DJ SS on fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet with big roman dial.

If I may ad an option, the 16610 would be a great first Rolex.

However, at the end of the day, you cant go wrong with either, including the 16610.

Here you go:

http://www.melrosejewelers.com/model...ence-chart.htm

Take a look at these. There are three numbers of importance to you: 1. model number or case number 2. serial number 3. caliber number.

The model or case number tells you just that, and an indication of age.
Serial number, enables you to check if the watch has been stolen, and age.

Caliber no. tells you the type of movement in the watch.

There is a 4th number, COST. A very important number indeed. Let's make it simple: for a first Rolex: stainless steel(ss) submariner date.....5 or 6 years old can be bought from a trusted seller here on TRF, thousands of dollars less than a new one. For trusted sellers there's a section on this Forum. Of course, you must always get references. Good luck!

My vote would be the Explorer. I think it is great for every setting and a little bigger than the DJ.

The Explorer is a classic. If you can, try both sizes to see what is a better fit for you.

The DJ has the advantage of the date. Also many dial and bracelet and bezel choices. What appeals to you at 20 may change over time in terms of the combo so think long term and I recommend going simple and classic (I like a stick dial).

Take your time and enjoy the process. I also recommend the TRF Trusted Sellers.

Google is your friend.

The reference numbers aren't necessary in most discussions, but they do make it easy when discussing some models as a shorthand for the full names.

114270 the last of the 36mm Explorers
214270 the new 39mm Explorer
116200 the newer, larger, polished case DateJust in SS with the domed bezel.

TT datejust with jubilee bracelet & stick dial ( I prefer the champagne dial myself),many dials to choose from & it looks great with a suit or casual with a Tshirt & jeans.

The DateJust is the classic Rolex. It also has the date function that I find to be a must in a watch. The new 39mm Explorer in nice, but if you have to have the date it's a dealbreaker. I'd go for the DateJust. I did and I have no regrets whatsoever!
