Resistance while winding?

Hey guys,

My Datejust was bought new in may 2015. I've worn it pretty consistently over the last 7 months, and pretty much everyday the last 2 months. Because I wear it everyday, I haven't wound it in a while. It keeps perfect time.

I tried winding it tonight, and I can feel resistance when I wind it. It takes some effort, and feels gritty. I wonder if I should get it checked out? Or is it normal since I've been wearing it 18 hours a day for the last 2 months straight?

Any advice welcome!

Not normal. It's likely the crown and tube. At least that is what RSC diagnosed my problem with very similar symptoms on a Submariner

Based on the resistance and gritty feeling it sounds like the watch is fully wound and that's what you're feeling (mainspring slipping as it's designed to do once fully wound).
Did you experience this feeling trying to wind after wearing all day long?

Yah, I experienced it trying to wind it a few times after wearing it all day. It felt gritty even on the first rotation - almost difficult to turn. The watch hs kept time within 1 second a day for almost 7 months, and it is not dirty or anything.

I suppose it could be fully wound and that feeling is just the mainspring slipping. I am going to RSC to pick up my GMT early next week so I will check with them when I bring it in, since it is still covered under warranty.

I want to let it run down and try winding it from dead, but that means I won't have a watch to wear for a few days

To test this theory just give it a try (hand wind) tomorrow morning after it's been sitting on your night stand for a few hours. Hopefully you wake up and it's smooth as butter. I know the first time I felt mine fully wound it freaked me out. Good luck!

Good advice - I will try to wind it a bit tomorrow morning! Hopefully the 8 hour rest makes a difference.

If it's what we're hoping it is (watch fully wound) the 8 hours rest will most definitely make a difference. Good luck and report back!

Your watch is fully wound - if you want to test it, lay it down for 48 hours and wind it. What's happening is the slip of the main spring at full wind. I'm guessing your watch is fine.

OR let it wind all the way down and see how it feels winding from zero. How is performs will at least help the repair shop find an issue.

Thanks for the help guys! Honestly, I've only wound this watch three or 4 times in the last 7 months since I wear it so much - maybe I'm just not used to the feeling. Will report back tomorrow .

I tried winding it tonight, and I can feel resistance when I wind it. It takes some effort, and feels gritty. I wonder if I should get it checked out? Or is it normal since I've been wearing it 18 hours a day for the last 2 months straight?

Any advice welcome!

Any update?

Yes, if the watch is fully wound continued winding will feel more difficult and can feel "gritty" as the mainspring turns in the barrel.
