Did I Do the Right Thing?

A little about me...

I'm 39 years old and from the UK. I got "into" watches in my early twenties. I've owned Omega's, Rolexes, Breitling's Panerai's, Dubey & Schaldenbrand etc etc. I currently own two Rolexes, a Submariner Hulk (3 years old) and Z-Blue dial Milgauss (10 months old).

For the last few weeks now I've been thinking about part-exing both my Rolexes. The reason for this is because I'm starting to get fed up of switching between the two. I wear my Milgauss for work (shirt & tie) and my Sub outside of work. I was intent on looking for a new Rolex model, one which would be my last purchase (I have other financial responsibilities now!) and one which would never leave my wrist no matter what - i.e wear it for bed, wear it in the bath, wear it for dinner, wear it for everything basically.

The one watch I identified was the Sea Dweller 4000. This watch is obviously a tool watch but appears to be it could be one of those "bomb-proof" watches you could wear in any situation and not worry about it. I like the lack of cyclops, it's thickness, its brushed steel appearance and the feel of it on my wrist.

Here's where my problem starts....

I also like a watch which grab people's attention. Ever since getting into watches I've always admired the two-tone blue-face Submariner. I've always wanted to own one of those.

Fast forward to today. I was in my local AD and there they were, the Sea Dweller 4000 and two-tone sub sat side-by-side. I popped in (as you do) for a chat.

I discussed with the dealer the possibility of trading both of my watches for either the Sea Dweller or Sub. The prices he offered were:


* £4,000 for the Hulk and;
* £3,750 for the Milgauss.


£7,750 in total.

The Sea Dweller retails at £6,900, I'd get £850 back.

The sub retails at £8,950, there'd be a £1,200 deficit.

The dealer said I could take out a two year 0% finance deal to pay the deficit, that's £50 per month, perfectly manageable.

I was worried to begin with about the Sub. I was worried in case it was too blingy and would attract unwanted attention (from the wrong sort). I was also unsure whether this watch could be the watch for all occasions. I'm conscious of scratching the PCL's etc etc. When I tried it on I liked it but wasn't blown away by it - probably because the dealer was busy talking to me.

When I tried the Sea Dweller on, I didn't really get that wow feeling of it being something which stands out but did feel like I could wear it and not ever worry about it.

I walked out of the shop without choosing either.

My heart tells me to go for the Sub. It's the one watch I've always wanted. However I'm just conscious of not being able to keep that thing permanently on my wrist in all situations.

My head is telling me two things. Either go for the Sea Dweller, take the £850 cash, enjoy wearing it and never worry about it being scratched. The other thing its telling me is that its not really a stand out watch, you might get bored with it after a while and that I should keep both my Hulk and Milgauss.

What do you guys think?

I can't add either the Sub or Sea Dweller to my current Rolexes, it's not financially possible for me at this moment in time. I've also looked at other models including GMT's, Yachtmaster's etc but don't feel any of these are the right ones for me.

Any responses would be most appreciated.

I would sell the milgauss privately on these forums, for example, and get a bit more money. I would keep the hulk and go for the TT submariner blusey. The hulk as a daily wearer and the TT blusey for evenings. I am sure the dealer would set you up with 0% financing for the TT sub using the down payment you get from the milgauss sale. Or, and this would be my plan of action, sell the milgauss privately and buy the TT blusey lnib from davidsw or takuya. The TT blusey depreciates fairly hard and you would save a bunch.

How can you get fed up with the two you have ? both of them can be easily used for everyday wearing. If you really have to, sell one and you're done.
That's the cheapest and sensible way imho.

But knowing the feeling when your mind is all set on a new one all too well , I'd probably go with the Sub , you always wanted it. The PCL's have never been an issue for me (own the TT GMT) the swirls and fine scratches blend in and are only visible up close. It is blingy but not over the top. Happy choosing

I know exactly where you're coming from. The bluesy is one of my favorites, too. But, you just can't beat a steel Rolex for ultimate versatility and durability.

My opinion...you've already got a great steel reference in the LV. One of the best. Keep that one and sell the Millie (privately, not a trade in) to get the best bang for your buck. Then add the bluesy when you can comfortably afford it.

Don't pay over £7.5K for the two tone Subc. Look around on chrono24 and even ask other ADs, plus you could get a fair bit more on the two you want to sell if you avoid the AD, basically you should come out a grand ahead not in deficit. Hunt around and research the market.

Just sell the Millgauss and keep the LV. It meets all of your needs. It has the brushed finish that you like for everyday wear, but the dial gives it the visual pop that you like for grabbing attention. Sometimes you already have the perfect thing.

I think Milgauss/Hulk is the best combo. Stick to this.

This forum is crazy for subs. But having two Subs don't really help your plan on having one watch for everything and a Milgauss/Hulk is more versatile than two Subs.
