That 3, 6, 9 design is so perfect as a 36mm dial, I'm not sure Rolex needed to mess with it, despite the trend toward bigger watches. (That trend will likely go back toward vintage sizes at some point, of course.) I saw the same thing happen to the Omega Railmaster, another beautiful vintage 36mm design that Omega blew up to 39mm and even a ridiculous 41mm. Why make such a classic into different sizes? What's next, a 36mm Sub?
I doubt many folks will take issue with the 39mm size. A bunch of guys on this forum own the Vantage which is a 39mm homage to the 1016.

This is an old picture, but you can gauge the size (39mm MkII Vantage) relative to some common Rolex models.

New explorer

Just taken delivery of my new explorer and love it....think the size is great as 36mm just felt too small for me. Like you spent ages deciding but very happy. Getting slightly fed up with a lot of people moaning about the hands issue, Rolex know what they are doing it is VERY elegant, the lines and finish of the watch are gorgeous and sits beautifully on the wrist :)

That was an excellent series of articles. In the final article Hillary's watch is shown, but you don't mention the model number. What model was it?

It might be next to the Submariner as one of the best watches ever made by Rolex!

I love the simple, harmonious face, just perfect!

Do you guys know if its still available in 36mm?

I have a 7.70" wrist, and don't know if it will look good on me, or should I wait for the new 39mm to roll out?

Definitely my next Rolex!

The new explorer looks great, but I'm not a fan of the shorter hands.

nice watch dont think explorer was worn on everest , they wore oyster perpetuals and a smiths , the explorer was brought out as a tribute to the climb most people know the truth the rolex hilary wore was a white dial oyster perpetual .
