I decided to abuse my new Sub and see what happened!

I have a new M series Sub that I have been babying for some time now. I finally decided to treat it like the rest of my watches. So, I decided to go mountain biking in Mammoth California. Normally I take a quartz watch. This time I brought my new Sub. My wife could not believe I was going to take it. So, I mountain biked and camped for a week.

Mammoth has a gondola that takes you to 11,000 feet and then you ride down. Most of the ride is like being on a jack hammer nonstop. My entire body bounced and jerked all the way down. I got rained on, hailed on and I fell off the bike, landed on my left arm and buried the sub in the volcanic gravel. At the end of the day I took it into the 104 degree spa and then went swimming with it on. I wore it 24 hours a day and really beat the heck out of it. I honestly thought the pounding as I rode down the mountain would dislodge something. It was really rough.

When I was done the stainless had some minor scratches on the band that were not there before. Easily can be buffed out. The crystal has no scratches. The watch gained about 6.5 seconds per day before the ride and still gains the same. No affect on the time keeping at all.

This is one tough watch.

I am the guy on the right in the purple shirt. My watch is on my left wrist.

Looks like fun. I would have left it at home though!

Cool story and it sounds like a great time. I mountain bike regularly but wear my Ironman when I go. It's not that I think my SD couldn't handle it but I wear it kind of loose and it would beat up my wrist too much. Basically, I don't think I could handle it. Good to hear it took the abuse with no problems.

Looks like a heck of week riding. We don't have that kind of elevation here in FL, but that doesn't stop me from taking my Rolex out for a ride from time to time. That watch can take more than me, that's for sure.

Well that is what they were designed for.
Not to be wrapped up in cotton wool.
Great photo, by the way.

Yeah, take a diving watch up a mountain!!

Just kidding. I'm a big believer that what makes these watches so awesome is their durability and use-ability. Looks like you had a great time biking, and I'd love to do that myself.

Glad to hear you had a good time...It's good to see people taking their SUBs, GMT's or Expl's and giving them the good once over. After all, this is what the good people at Rolex designed them for.

You reminded me of the time I was mountain biking with my Sub LV, I crashed and automatically I raised my wrist up, thanked God nothing happend it to the watch....Usually after a crash, I made sure my bike was ok, but this time I checked the watch first, then the bike and finally myself

I usually wore my Omega Planet Ocean while mountain biking but now I wear a Citizen titanium diver watch which saves some weights and goes well with my titanium Lightspeed. Beside the Planet Ocean was jerking like crazy on my wrist and became somewhat unconfortable because of its hefty weight,

great adventure story. I'd take a rolex anywhere except for working on cars. That would truly be abuse. Your experience is simply good use. I bet a Nato band would also be a bit more comfy on these kind of trips.

I've taken the liberty to report you for abusive behavior to the Rolex Police and they will be around shortly to remove the victim from your custody.

Alternatively, you can save the embarrassment and send the victim to me for permanent rehabilitation and TLC.

Rewind, scrub, rewind and record:

Good going, why not enjoy, going downhill is much easier (and maybe more fun), but it is a lot more dangerous. Take care

Well it is great that you guys use your watches, but the two statements that I am hearing "that's what it is designed for" and "it is one tough watch" are a little misleading, with the former being totally wrong.

The sub is a diving watch, designed to take water pressure... it is not designed for the outdoor activities .. it is designed for underwater activities where shock and impact is minimum...

ROLEXES do not handle shock well .. it is not their virtue ....yes they are tough watches but what a sub does best is waterproffness to a certain depth and keeping in sync .... you want shockproofness, and a watch that gest banged around a lot, get a gshock ... otherwise a suunto ...

If you keep up this activity while wearing your sub, soon you will take an impact and you will see a small deviation in time keeping ....and off it goes to an RSC to get fixed.....

People on this board have dropped their watches in the bathroom and the delicate mechanism inside has gotten whacked ...

Sounds like you had a great time. I have no doubt your Rollie or anyones Rollie wouldn't be up for the task. Now my back, that's another story. If I were you, I would be back in the hospital again screaming for more morphine. Glad you both came home unscathed.

Man, I have had $200 Seiko Autos that can handle this "abuse." I would sure like to think that my Sub could at least hold up to the same!
