No, not really. I'll quote Ron Paul's recent admission in this regard: "Of course, in a free society, secession is a right of the states."
It may not have been right to own slaves, but the southern states had every right to secede from the union, and making war on them to force them back into the union was certainly beyond the bounds of what the Constitution says.
