I banged my 16710 GMT off numerous chairs this past week at work. It can handle that and much more. Get what you want and enjoy.

My vote goes for a 14060 Sub, two liner with the head only. Wear it on a NATO and never think twice about it. Another pick would be the Exp II 16570, head only to wear on a NATO. Both are fabulous.

If you really wanted to go cheap - then get a Seiko 007 diver. Tough as nails and awesome.

There are a plethora of options in the "black bay" price range. Sounds like you're about to take a fun but lengthy journey through the watch world. Good luck.

Personally, IMO black bay is good, Sinn has a variety of tough tool watches a bit below that range with cool combos of synth lube and Argone gas that can increase performance and longevity. There are hardened titanium cases, hardened submarine steel cases, oil filled dials...a lot of fun options for pieces you can abuse the hell out of without losing a couple thousand in value in the process. Heck, you can find many of them used for around a couple thousand.

Its kind of a consensus among a lot of watch enthusiasts that smaller pieces do get less damaged over time.

So explorer i 36mm. It fits the budget. No rotating bezel. Just plain hardcore Rolex.

Spend 200 and get a seiko diver. Throw it on a strap and never worry about it again.

Well it really depends on the size you are looking for. Personally I would recommend the DSSD D blue, which is my daily beater, the lumes stay bright all through the night, it is highly durable and looks fantastic.

If you are looking at a lower price point then any submariner or explorer 2 will do the trick. If you are used to vintage pieces I would guess that you prefer your watches to be around 40mm in diameter, so the above 2 fits the bill.

If you travel quite a bit then the BLNR is unbeatable.

If you are in the scientific field then of course the Milgauss should be the choice.

So let us know a little bit more about your lifestyle and profession and we can start narrowing it down.

I've relegated my Pelagos to 'beater' duty. It didn't cost me that much to begin with so I don't mind the scratches. If/when it comes time for service, I will skip the RSC and use an independent shop.

From the modern Rolex lineup, I'd have to go with an EXP II. The ceramic bezel models have evolved past the "tool watch" scenario. The classic aluminum bezel models would be fine beaters - can't wait to get one!

I agree a 1460 Sub on a nato strap is a great choice.

You can get a 14060 for around $4,500. Or a tudor black bay.

How about a speedmaster?

Got to echo the Explorer 2 vibe (40mm). After much thought I bought a 2007 polar model and wear it almost every day for work etc. It's practical, discreet and still has presence. They are also fantastic value currently.

In the UK the same age GMT (non ceramic) are doing £6k plus and apart from the bezel they are pretty much the same piece. Ex2's are nearly half the price.

I love mine:
