Rolex 16660 (triple 6) sea dweller - matte mark i face - sapphire - serial 746xxxx

Does anyone have any thoughts on if it makes sense to sell my Rolex Sea Dweller Triple 6 - 16660 - Matte face - Sapphire Crystal - (1982) Serial 746XXXX in this market or is there much more upside in holding it. What would you do?

I'd keep it - I might buy one, actually.

Search for sale ads here and VRF to see what the market is doing these days. In my humble opinion, the market is strong for vintage sport rolex at the moment, and it would be just a W.A. guess to speculate on what it will do in the future.

I tried to search for another on here to get a feel for todays market value, but didn't see a similar one from recent. I was given a new one by my wife for christmas. If there was much room for appreciation in the future it would make sense to keep it (I have had it for so long - (It was the first gift she gave me when we got married), but maybe were near the top I would like to sell it rather than it just sit in the safe. Any idea of its value?

I wasn't able to find another 1982 with same features in any recent ad when I just searched. Any idea on today's market value?

Depends on who's buying. I purchased an 8.3 matte for $4800. recently and a 8.5 white gold surrounds for $4500. I'd think a retail price is around the 6K mark by now. If you have box and papers that's a plus.

Look at the stock market. Makes the time to sell if you want to get rid of it.
Who knows how the next few years will turn out

If you don't wear it and don't want it, sure, sell it. Prices are on the upswing for older SDs. However, from the one photo you posted it looks as if the hands have some corrosion. Perhaps it's just the lighting. If there is significant corrosion on the hands, that'll affect the price, of course. Good luck either way.

Personally, I would keep it. The prices of double reds drove up white 1665, now the prices of 1665 whites are driving up matte 16660. The gentleman above who got one for $4800 got a steal.

Also, no reason not to wear it in rotation with the new one.

Yeah, that was a reflection of my arm holding the camera to take the picture. I will post different angle, I don't see any corrosion anywhere when i look at it. I did some research and found out it has a MK 1 face. The cheapest I found on here for one with a older date code (1983) on here and 6 months ago from a trusted forum member was asking 9,000. On ebay for the same seem to vary from 8999.00 to 13,800. On chrono24 there is only 2 similar ones between 11,000 to 12,400 i believe. The 1982 has the MK 1 face and from my research seems to be more valuable.

I think a matte dial is commanding a little more these days. I've seen excellent examples sell around $9500. Personally, I'd keep it.

Stop teasing me!

I've been looking for a birth year ('82) SD for a long time now. The SD is what got me interested in Rolex in the first place (my first was a '95 16600 that I still have), and my next watch will be an '82 SD or a 116660. The easy way out for me is looking to be the DS. It's my wife's favorite and she suggested I find one from the year we met (2009).

Anyways, I'll be scouring the FS section in case you decide to part with it (hint, hint, wink, wink).

I suspect you'll get some PM's before then. Nice looking SD, good luck with the sale.

Nice. A matte 16660 for $4800? I'll take ten of them.

For me I think I would rather have it go to a collector who appreciates it, rather than someone who is just going to buy it and 2 minutes later stick it online with a 30% or greater mark-up. The guy who is trying to complete a missing piece of his collection or has some connection to the year, matte mk 1 dial, sapphire or whatever makes it special to him and even wants to wear it daily (maybe father had that one and reminds him of his father) means more to me. No offense to the dealers out there, they certainly have there place in any market, just have found in most markets the dealers of any item have the tendancy to down play what you have until they have it and it is the greatest thing when they go to resell it. Amazing how that works!

Nice piece , I think these are around 8-9 k , you'll find plenty buyers here
You should keep it and also enjoy the new one
Unless you need the$ , it will go up but prob not as much as the stock market

whats your wifes take on the watch she bought you as the first gift after you got married that your now selling ? Remember once its gone, its gone.

I'd an Omega SMP that bought in the mid 90's - considered selling it maybe after 10 years but now look back at pictures from 5/ 10/ 15 years ago & thats the watch I'm wearing in a lot of those pic's. After a number of years ina drawer, its now the watch I wear to my work every day

She has her eye on a new Mercedes, believe me this will cost me 10 times whatever I get. Wait till she finds out I want a Contender 31' (that's a boat). We are a family who loves our toys! Sentiment always seems to loose out to our wants 😀

Forgive me if I'm incorrect - still learning these things - but I thought the Mk 1 dial didn't have the italicized "ft" and "m" letters. At least that's true for the 1665, for sure. Is it a different criteria for the Triple 6??
