Advice on buying my first?

Hello All!

New to the forum...been lurking for a bit but this is my first post.

Anyway, I'll be buying a 116610LN (my first real watch) in the next couple of weeks. Have gone back and forth on new vs used and I think I've settled on new.

Any advice? Also, the AD here sucks so I'll probably buy from the forum. Is there any way to get factory warranty outside an AD?

Congrats on the future purchase and welcome! As long as you get a card you will have a factory warranty on a new watch. Depending on when the watch was bought, if you get it from a trusted seller you will have most of the five year warranty left and likely your name on the card as well.

Make sure to buy the seller, plenty of good ones here who should have that watch in stock New and cheaper than your AD can touch.

Welcome to the forum.
Plenty of good sellers here. Just ask one for a bnib watch with your name on the card. I would guess you will have no problem finding one.

Reach out to takuya for sure! He can hook you up with a BNIB with you name on the card and a factory warranty. If he has one preowned you can be confident in that route as well but of course stock may vary.

One thing to keep in mind, which for whatever reason people don't like to talk about, is that here in NY RSC is very strict about warranty transfers. On occasion they've required a bill of sale to transfer an active warranty to a name that's not originally on the card. They say that their policy always requires a bill of sale if the watch originates from a foreign AD.

There might be some response here saying that "the warranty always follows the watch, end of story", and while I agree it should, I can tell you first hand that's not always the case at least at RSC NY, without proper receipts/bills of sale.

Just something to keep in mind if you end up going pre-owned.

With your name on the card you shouldn't have an issue though.

I'll second Takuya. Send him a PM. I just want to add that if you buy a pre owned that is outside of the warranty period, it doesn't matter whose name is on the card. The RSC in NYC will service the watch. You just have to pay for the service.

I think new is the way to go for this, your first. The money's not going to be that much different and it would be worth it, to me, anyway.

Definitely reach out to our trusted sellers if you don't care for your AD.

The key thing is to "buy the seller" first. Check on their history and transactions. Only when you're comfortable wiring a stranger money, then you should consider this venue. Once you do, you'll find plenty of options and opinions. If you reallly want to save money, get the sweet spot, used with 5 year warranty. Of you go older and need service you might have to pay for it ams any price advantage might be gone. If you can't stand anybody doing the wearing in period for you, and taking the initial depreciating hit, go for a BNIB. Still cheaper to source in the sale section here and "shipping out of state" for sales tax adjustment ( this is not tax advice). I would strongly recommend buying from an AD especially it being your first watch. Who cares if your ad sucks ypur not being friends just buying a watch. Offer all cash and get a discount. Ask for the same price you'd get from a trusted seller on here. They probably won't agree but should come close, although each city and ad is different.

Lots of great advice - especially about buying the seller. I would just add this: if you decide to go the AD route, buy from an out of state AD and have them ship it to you. That way you'll save sales tax. Another member pointed me to an AD for my first and, although I was a little skeptical initially, it went off without a hitch.

Paying cash is a pain. Use a card to get your miles or cash back, and buy from out of state from a trusted seller.

there's alot of appeal, the "cool factor" of an older sub, maybe even with lug holes, the sleeker lugs and slimmer bezel. The character, historical significance... and save loads! And if you want to get out of it, for whatever reason, need cash or just change your mind, you will lose on a new watch, especially at AD prices. I'd hate to have to use a warranty. Not everything is covered, I imagine you'll be without your watch for awhile, and you can't even be sure your concern is corrected. A good watch repair guy, not necessarily authorized, should be able to service your watch. I'll bet you're alot younger than me! Good luck!

about a year ago, I was heating up for my first Rolex. "Oyster" and "perpetual" popped up all the time and I didn't know what they meant. I had watches coming and going, vintage ones that I realized were too small, new ones that were too big. Hand winding and quartz. I read alot online and was starting to form some opinions. Definitely size it yourself, too many scratches coming from sloppy AD work. But do it with the right tools and carefully. Tape the watch if you want to ensure you don't scratch the watch. Here is one of many screwdriver threads:

As others have said, do your research on the seller and the watch itself. You are spending a lot of money, so make sure it is exactly what you want from a person you trust.

For a first buy I'd recommend an AD. You can negotiate despite how it may initially seem. Cash generally results in a discount, while in-house financing usually does not. Check the Rolex website for nearby AD's in neighboring states and try a few calls. It nice to have that AD experience for your first purchase. After that you can decide if you're comfortable in wiring funds to a trusted seller you have researched and corresponded with to your satisfaction. Trusted sellers are great, just a bit tough on the first buy IMHO. Good luck! Cheers!
