OK to Wear Rolex at a Funeral?

An uncle (in-law) passed away last week and his immediate family is trying to decide whether wearing a Rolex (in the casket) would be appropriate or possibly foolhardy. As he was a frequent vacation visitor to Hawaii, he will be dressed in an Aloha shirt and assorted leis. He was also a Rolex afficionado and the question remains if he should be presented wearing his 18K President (his favorite watch) or possibly an SS Submariner which was his daily wearer. While the query sort of flabbergasted me, a question arose as to whether this might be a mistake during pre-service viewings. As these sessions are often unsupervised by funereal staff, a potential Rolex rip-off always remains a distinct possibility. My suggestion was that he wear his G-Shock (another favorite) for these pre-service viewings and that the family decide on the President or Submariner later down the road. Another consideration is that he will eventually be interred wearing one of these watches. The 18K President is a 1980s model while the SS Submariner is a 5512 (his first Rolex). While this dilemma may appear questionable to some, at least he is not being cremated with the chosen watch. That would raise a few eyebrows.

Difficult questions.

But certainly makes a good case for keeping one's will up to date.

His wife (or closest living relative) that knows him best should make the final decision. I would recommend wearing the 5512 based on his Aloha vibe.

Just as they don't bury the Queen with the family jewels, so too, it makes little sense to deck out our relatives in their finest potential heirlooms.

This is kind of unique for my first post but what the heck. IMHO when someone is laid out for a wake that's how they'll ultimately be buried. Unless you plan on closing the casket with a Rolex inside, which is fine, use the G-Shock.

No watch. The day will be hard enough. It will be that much worse if a Rolex goes missing.

Interesting thread!

I guess I'll have to add this to my list of final wishes!

I guess y'all are determined to prove those people wrong who, all his life, told him "you can't take it with you".

My limited experience with these matters has been that the jewlery was returned before they closed the casket for burial.

My goodness, what a curious conundrum.

Unless his wishes expressed to be buried with one of the watches then surely it is better to pass it on to someone in the land of the living as a treasured keep sake and memory of the person now deceased? (Unless of course you inherit the G-shock!)

I would hate to think the measure of the man necessitated being laid in state with a Rolex on his wrist.

I think it better no watch at the wake, no watch at the burial. As has already been posted, if it goes missing before, or worse, after the burial, it's going to cause too much emotional problems on top of what your family members will already be dealing with.

Having conducted many funerals I have seen all kinds of things with deceased as they lie in state for viewing. In the vast majority of cases the items are removed from the body discreetly (in private most of the time) and returned to the family. Most common would be wedding rings and other jewelry.

I personally wouldn't give the watch a second thought. If there are any concerns it is very simple, in most cases, to have a representative of the funeral home with the casket and body at all times during the viewing. I have found most people in the business very accommodating to the families wishes. Sounds like it was an important part of his life's journey. Nothing wrong either way though.

No watch. While it seemed to be part of his personality to wear e.g. the gold President there is simply too much that can go wrong.
