No Publix in Mi.just Kroger, Meijer and Wal Mart here with a few Aldis but not sure if they have a pharmacy. I know target does too. I can't believe how many storefronts there are for CVS and Walgreens. Theres 5 pharmacies within half a mile of each other here and I live in a fairly small town. Seems like alot of competition but they've been here for 15 years now so everyone must be majing decent money.

I live less than a block from a Walgreens and a CVS.

I rarely visit either.

Whatever they sell, I can pick up at the grocery store, while I'm there.

The grocery store is faster and cheaper.

It actually did! Deal was announced back in October of 2015 but is now just closing since they will divest over 800 stores.

What's to happen with all the redundant real estate? I have all three on the same traffic circle a mile from my house (cvs/rite aid/ Walgreens)

Some of the redundant Rite Aid stores will either stay under the Rite Aid banner (but owned by Fred's) and some likely will close thus opening up the real estate for others to take over or sit empty. CVS and Walgreen locations are not impacted unless Walgreens has an old crappy store near a new Rite Aid store they are taking over and then I could see them using the Rite Aid location and closing the crappy Walgreens.

Oh wow! This is not good.

ETA:When Target sold their pharmacy to CVS, a lot of people were very unhappy and they missed the red bottles that Target would dispense their medication in and the Target bottles could also be color coded.

It seems like the pharmacies (CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid) near me are always filled with the shadiest people. I have just been going to Target instead, unless there is an emergency and I need a 24 hour option. The last time I went to Rite Aid, I literally saw this couple shooting up in the parking lot.

It usually leads to fewer consumer choices as a majority of customers will now be forced into choosing only one (or both) of the two major outlets. Mergers and acquisitions can also create staff reductions/unemployment (due to a replication of certain job duties/roles) and potential price gouging by the reduced number of companies now controlling the retail market.

Exactly. They are almost like Starbucks. At least 2 at every intersection.

This is why I don't shop at CVS. Cigarettes are too dangerous but they'll carry kits to recessitate junkies just so they can go out and do it again. While many see this as a good option to help addicts. I only see it creating more. Heroine use is on the rise and I feel its largely in part that people can now do it "safely".

I don't think drug prices will be overall effected though. Still plenty of pharmacies and CVS is going to have to compete to keep their customers even harder now.

My old town had a Walgreens on one corner and a Rite-Aid right across on the opposite corner. Wonder what happens now.

A new pizza parlor or a Quick Mart I'd guess.

Anytime that you get your medication from either CVS or Walgreens or Rite Aid, be sure that you are getting the right amount that you were prescribed. Because one time my mother counted her medication and it was for a 30 day supply but she only was only given 27 pills, so she had to go back to the pharmacy and ask for the three pills that was missing from her Rx.

Let's put a nail into the Rx coffin and get our meds by mail. Given the state of retail stores today, I am glad ecommerce is taking over.

I buy everything online but for some unknown reason I want to personally pick up my prescriptions and have them in hand. If the pharmacy is out they will get get them in a day or I can go to another location. With online I would be concerned that they don't show up on time, get lost, send the wrong stuff, etc..

The other thing about mail order Prescriptions that I don't like is when they are on the UPS or the Fedex all day long in the hot Texas weather before it's delivered to you. Because if your prescription is stored at the wrong temperature, it will lose it's effectiveness. For example, My mother's insurance company uses a mail order pharmacy and her insulin sometimes arrives when cooling pack doesn't have any ice left and it's not at cooler temps that it should be.
