Scratch on glass of brand new Rolex
Hi,
I bought a GMT Master ii yesterday, brand new from an AD, and as soon as I got it home under some brighter lighting I could see a very faint hair line scratch on the sapphire crystal. Took it to the shop today and they said I should take it to St James in London where they can repair it. However, how long will that take? Does anybody know? 1-2 months? It's a brand new purchase and the shop confirmed verbally its there (2 members of staff saw it) and they said they could also send it away for fixing. What should I do about this, just get a refund and buy at another AD? Really is a nightmare scenario. Regards, Tom |

Can't the AD just replace it?
If not, return it and wait.

If it were me, I would return it and wait for a new one to arrive - you paid for a BNIB watch and that's what you should receive.

They should be able to replace a crystal and pressure test it in 30 minutes or so.

if you send it to RSC for warranty it will be 4-6 weeks average.
Thats the problem with ADs. If you buy from them 1 day and find a problem the next the only thing they will do is send it to Rolex under warranty. I've still yet to meet an AD that will swap out the watch for a new one even if its 1 day old. I think there should be some consumer protection against that and give ppl at least 7 days full refund if there is any defect. |

Get the Ad to accept it back and give you a new one. You deserve nothing less.

Were the stickers on the watch when purchased?
If it is actually a scratch that can be felt with a fingernail and not something that can be buffed off, then I would return the watch.

Make sure checking the dial for dust particles when you are picking the watch up.

In UK now it might be quicker to have RSC look at it, a replacement might take more than a month, supply is still very slow.

Stock seems low at the ADs I checked with due to low Sterling and Tourists buying loads of high end goods. All their stock is effectively sitting in the window, which isn't a lot of watches, they have a few stickers on yes, but being moved around and tried on etc.. This is even the case with a White Gold GMT I saw and even a Platona sitting there in the window. The best thing about getting the Daytona last year was it was fresh off a shipment, the day before, and was like watching it being woken up from cryo-status with all the stuff they had to peel off and remove. I knew I was the first person to ever wear it or even really touch it. |

This is a no brainer (to me). Take it back and demand a return/refund. Scratches can, do, and will happen. But they shouldn't come out of the box that way. You paid good money for your watch. You should get exactly what you are paying for; a BNIB, pristine timepiece.

I was about to say hopefully it's just the sticker. But you said stickers have been removed.
I had a scare last month when I unboxed my smurf. I removed all stickers and when I was about to put it away for the night, I noticed a scratch on the clasp. All sorts of thoughts passed my head. After looking, feeling and buffing (with just cloth) the scratch for some time, I noticed that it was just the sticker. I inadvertently left one on. I thought I already removed all. Good luck with your scratch. I guess you know your legal rights. If defective, they should replace. But I glean the issue is how to expedite wearing one. Waiting for replacement might be longer than having it fixed. Personally, I would wait for the replacement. |
