Datejust II or Submariner
Doesn't matter on which particular color way, just which style watch you prefer.

It is a tough choice but I think it is a matter of which one first because after you get your first the second will inevitably follow.

I'd choose the Sub of the two, but would instead say DJ 41 with jubilee. The Jubilee just feels nicer on the wrist IMO, more comfortable as well.

For me a slate gray with green outlined romans is tough to get out of my head. I've put that watch off twice. Once for a DD and now my new sub. It'll happen one day I'm sure. Get one now and save for the second. I predict DJII used prices will not hang with used sub prices though. I would get the sub now and wait for used DJII's to flood the market.

I've got both. I got the Dj11 with silver dial and smooth bezel first but my black dial sub date is my daily wearer. The DJ will be worn on more formal occasions.

Without knowing a bit more about your watch wearing preferences or lifestyle it's hard to guess.
The Sub is a great all round Rolex that never goes out of style and can be worn in almost any situation. The DJ2 is much the same and a tad dressier. I guess I'd choose the Sub if it's a first. |

The DJII is kind of a dressed down formal watch, whereas a Sub is more of a dressed up sports watch.
So both a very versatile but if you are more usually found in a suit at the office than board shorts at the beach then go DJ, and vice versa. I own both a GMT and a DJ and you could definitely see the GMT as the weekend watch and the DJ as the weekday watch. However now I added other watches to my little collection it's all a bit confused! |

You can't go wrong with either choice. As one of the other members said, you'll add the other one later.

I'm in the same boat at Justdate above. I'm fortunate enough to have both a GMT and a DJ2.
The GMT is my daily wearer, my tool watch I use daily for my job and figuring out when different markets are opening or closing etc. My DJ2 is my non-workday / weekend watch. If I were not using the multi time zone uses of the GMT like I do, then I would probably stick to just wearing the DJ2. I know the OP asked of a comparison of the Sub vs DJ2 so unless you need the use of the sub bezel then if it were me, I'd buy the DJ2. Any Rolex Datejust is a classic, but there again, so is a sub! Decisions, decisions..... |

I am not a fan of the proportions of the DJ2. So Sub. DJ 36 or 41 have better proportions so if they were in the mix I would say both.

Hmm, just style wise, assuming I don't own any other watches, I would prefer my first expensive watch to be an all rounder vs. a dive watch. When choosing my first Rolex I went with a Milguass over any of the other sports bezeled watches. Or would consider an EXI here as well.
Now if your saying specifically between the sub and DJII, I have never been a fan of the proportions of the DJII, and there are other watches I prefer over the DJ, so in this direct comparison, I would buy a submariner. |
