The affliction...

I take it that many of you here are also afflicted by this awful watch bug and was wondering what you do to control it.

How do you resist the urge to buy a beautiful Sub C when you already have a couple nice watches??

Do any of you set some sort of rule system with yourself and limit to X watches per X time increment or wait for when you reach particular goals?

Buy when one sings to me and I can afford it. Right now I'm between waiting a bit and getting a gold rolex or going for a lvc or dj2.

I'm probably a one watch person as I feel like I lose the connection with my other watches when I have to divide my wrist time between more than one. The thought of banishing my current watches to 'the box' for longer periods keeps me from buying more.

Try and set yourself a time gap of say 3 months between purchases and give yourself some chores/tasks to do in the mean time so you "earn" the watch.

My secret...... stay away from watch stores. It's a lot of fun to read about these watches and, in time, you realize you don't really have to own them all.

I do my research and agonize (in a fun way) over which watch I'd love to own. At that point I check to see how much is in the watch fund. If there's enough, I'll buy the watch. If not, I can pretty much estimate how long it'll take to reach my goal.
Almost a year ago I was worried about the availability of a Tudor Black Bay ETA. So I sourced the watch through one of our trusted sellers and he graciously held onto it for six months until I had the money.

Funny you mention that because I just recently snagged one and now it's my new daily :)

The Black Bay is a terrific watch. I'm wearing mine right now.
Congrats on yours.

Try implementing this rule... when you want to buy a luxury item for yourself, make yourself wait one day for every $100 dollars that the item costs. So for example, if something you want to buy costs $1,000, make yourself wait 10 days. If you still want it, buy it. If something you want costs $10,000, make yourself wait 100 days. This will prevent you from making impulse purchases.

A good friend gave me this advice. For the record, I don't adhere to this methodology. Mainly because I'm degenerate. And I make a lot more money than him.

I always liked the idea of having one great watch that was always with me. It took me a few tries to figure out which one that would be, but, once I found it, it became easy.

Sub C is a must have. The other watches need to yield.

I have a watch fund that I contribute about $3000 a quarter to via payroll deduct. I am also open to trading/selling pieces I never wear. When the total of those two values equal what I have decided my next conquest will be I buy it.

If I had unlimited funds that I allocated to watches I would have a hard time holding myself back. This is the only throttle I have to use.

I decided to reduce the number of watches to force me to decide with which ones I really connected 100%. When I stop wearing or greatly reduce wrist time of a piece, then it goes.

My solution: Send one kid off to College and tell the wife she can redo the bathrooms. Result: no money to spend on watches. Problem solved. Haha!
