Icon12 Insurance co speaks: who owns Britain's Rolexes?

"It’s not every day that an insurance company paints the portrait of a typical Rolex owner. A British insurer has done just that, finding out who is behind the numerous policies on its books that include the brand with the coronet."

Correct ... in the UK, not necessarily everywhere else.

It would be interesting to see how these statistics vary from country to country, but like others have said, I'm surprised to see ownership skewed so heavily to the older. Maybe that says something more about durability/longevity of the product than the average purchaser.

I think the results would change a lot - in Asia certainly a lot of younger people wear Rolexes, and I believe the same is true (perhaps to a lesser extent) in the US. In the UK though ... not so much.

I think if GM were to do a study they would find that data is consistent with Corvette owners in the US.

I wonder where they got this info, I'm 24 and nobody will let me insure my Rolex's ever because it always seems the item I am trying to insure has a high loss ratio with them... Maybe they only insure 1.5% under 35

i am guessing the reason for so few younger owners is that many people here under 30, even those with decent income, still live with their parents due to house prices

so when the watch goes on the house insurance its obviously in the parents name

Surrey, Kent, Essex and London.

Literally thousands on the wrists of thirty-somethings and even younger.

Not sure where you're from in the UK but the typical demographic are not older people here in these areas.

Of course there are plenty of younger people who wear a Rolex (including me!), the article/report didn't say otherwise (66% over age 65 still leaves a lot under 65). Certainly in the more affluent south east the numbers will be a lot higher than elsewhere too. But: I maintain that "typically", in the U.K., a Rolex is worn by an older gentleman. Nothing wrong or unexpected about that.

Yep. What you've said there is spot on.

My post was merely in response to a post you'd made prior when you had responded to someone else where you had said in the UK it was 'an old persons watch'.

Old people buy insurance for their Rolex

I guess all we can say is that old people buy insurance for their Rolex.

If that means young people don't own a Rolex, or just don't bother to buy insurance for it, is impossible to say

Many people in the "younger" cohort think any watch is anachronistic, they rely on smart phones for the time.
