Winding smoothness

I have 2 Rolexes which have very different winding experience.

1993 12470 Explorer with 3000 calibre
2003 16710 GMT with 3185 calibre

The GMT winds very smooth with little resistance while the Explorer is a lot more sluggish. The Explorer keeps good time and the watch store said it was just serviced when purchased a little over a year ago.

My question is whether this sluggishness is inherit to the 3000 calibre or if this is a sign of needing service soon.

I experienced this with one of my watches. Took it to the Chicago "RSC" and they fixed it.

I've found variations between models also. Found that my GMT II was "rough", while the SD (16600) was the best. Explorers and Subs somewhere in-between.

Same here. Explorer used to be smooth, but now grinds a bit when winding. Sub winds smooth as a knife through butter. On the forum some will tell you it's the overwinding protection, but even when fully wound down my Explorer winds gritty.

Anyway, it does not bother me...yet. Just curious why my Explorer went from smooth winding to gritty overnight.
