My comments may not be valued as I've NOT owned both, but I would suggest giving the 114060 consideration. Yes, has no date, but thats made up in such a clean and balanced look. And it proves my superior brain power over the guys with the date model ;). One day I want to have both (add the SD4k) given their small differences... But as my one and only at this juncture, the sub fits the bill imo. If you can try them both on and determine which suits your needs, I wouldn't be able to wear the thicker as my daily as it's not comfortable under the cuff.

You forgot to mention the fat and out or proportion lugs on the Subc which makes itself the SD a winner every time

Disagree, and actually the fat lugs need to be on the SD, will make it far better balanced and less top heavy.

The Sea Dweller is the most water tight and goes down to great depths. If you are physically capable of going down 4000 ft and need reminding of the date, this is the watch for you. It has a date function but no cyclops, which is good for looking cool but bad if you are short sighted. Also it is the most bulky of the 3 watches, so some people will think you must be someone important to wear such a big watch whilst others will think you are a poseur.

The Sub is the coolest looking of the 3 watches and you can use it to dive down to about 1000 ft (depending on if its a recent model). When you are in the casino, women will drool over you because they can see you don't have to keep looking at the thing just to remind yourself what the date is. Women admire men who can remember the date.

The Sub Date is the most popular of the three because you can dive down to about 1000ft and easily read the date thanks to the Cyclops.

All three watches are truly tool watches and have a loyal following of devotees who can never make their mind up which one is the best.

I wear a Sub Date purely because it was a good deal when I bought it.

As regards to which one is the best, I would say that depends on how you use it and here you must be honest with yourself.

If you buy these expensive, highly water tight watches just to splash about in the pool or for the occasional snorkel dive, the Sub or Sub date is your best bet.

If you have the ability to remember what day it is, opt for the Sub, if you need to constantly look at the date, go for the Sub Date so you can see that it is the 28th when you are halfway to the bottom of the pool.

If you are a tough guy and one of the 0.00000001% who will be going down 4000 ft, then the Sea Dweller is the one for you.

Of course, if you actually do go down to 4000 ft, there is a good chance that you may be attacked by man eating sharks and if you are really unfortunate, you will also be eaten by the shark who will digest you and will shit you out as nature intended.

The main advantage of the Sea Dweller now comes into its own. It will be shat out with you and will sink, intact and ticking, to the bottom of the ocean and will lie and remain water tight on the ocean floor, gently ticking away, thanks to the ocean currents, as an ever lasting memorial to you.

I hope that helps.

Regards

Mick

To me, the SD is a watch Rolex makes because they can and not for any useful purpose. It's a technical achievement. I am a diver and could never even come close to stressing my TT Sub's ability so why the SD....?? Cyclops ='s a icon of Rolex. I also find the cyclops really useful with my eyes. The only better design than the Rolex cyclops is the inverted cyclops that Panerai does. Clean crystal with magnification is the best of both worlds.

There is quite a difference between the two models, with the most obvious being the lack of cyclops lens over the date on the SD. This gives the watch a slightly more sporty look IMO because the wearer may not need quick knowledge of the date as often as say, a 'desk diver' sub date. However, the sub on the other hand has a slightly bigger wrist presence because of the 'super case' (notice lug widths and crown guards bigger than SD) and even the cyclops makes it a bit more eye-catching.

The pressure rating difference actually means a great deal, because that is the reason for the SD lack a cyclops (uneven pressure on the crystal), having a thicker crystal, thicker case, and thicker case back than the sub. What this all means is that it's going to sit a lot 'taller' on your wrist, maybe making it a bit more difficult to tuck under a cuff or sleeve...which the wearer may or may not care about, but he will definitely care when he knocks it against a door jam

In either case both are awesome models. I assume that very few owners actually need a SD because their sub can't go on deep dives with them. The SD is definitely more rare and often mistake by a lot of non-horological nerds for a sub, which might bring the wearer a bit of satisfaction knowing that he has a less common model. On the other hand the sub is iconic and from a historical perspective there wouldn't be a SD without a sub, so there's the history and all to consider.

...but at the end of the day anyone considering either of the two should just go to their AD, try both on and buy whichever they like best.

The differences are so subtle it really comes down to personal preference

IMHO - the sub wears just a fraction better due to size

I've owned both. Do you want comfort or better legibility and a Glidelock

Next question to ask yourself is do you want a plain ole sub, or an over-engineered sub?

Personally, I always go for the over engineered. I've never owned a sub because the SD was better. Then when the DSSD came along, I dumped the SD and bought the DSSD and have kept it ever since.
My opinion exactly. With one point to add I have a big wrist and the sd and subs looked way to small. So in a sense had to spend more but in the long run I saved because all the different dials of the sub are really beautiful and at the very least I would have bought the hulk and a no date.

just go direct to the DSSD....problem solved...LOLOL...
jk

they both look very good, honestly..for some reason, i thought the SD was somewhat substantially larger...but oh well...the SD looks more definitive to me, if that means anything..:)

I prefer my SD.

The superior depth rating means it is less likely to fog up after a quick shower.

So, is there really much ado about nothing between these two models?

The differences are 'subtle' in appearance. Performance with respect to depth rating is clearly obvious but what about wearability.

Can someone who is fortunate enough to own both concurrently or have owned them each at one point in time kindly provide their thoughts?

It would be helpful for me in making my future decision.

Thanks

I have never owned the SD in any incarnation, but I have settled on the DSSD because it fits better on my wrist than a SD, and I have also had a few pre Ceramic Subs over the years with the 5513 being my all time favourite.

The Sub fits me better than a SD all day every day as I've found all models of the SD to be top heavy and awkwardly flop around unnecessarily.
I have passed on a number of lovely SD's(including the SDC) as a result.
This gave me reason to ponder this and consider the reasons why it would be so.
After seeing pics of the SD and Sub in profile and side by side, it became apparent the shape of the Mid-case of the SD(which is flatter than the Sub) in combination with the protruding nature of the Case-back contributes greatly to it's awkwardness.
I wonder if the Case-back of the SD is unique and a different shape or higher, as well as dimensionally thicker to increase it's ability to withstand increased pressure

At the end of the day, I am a dedicated DSSD owner largely in part because of it's wear-ability over the SD with the Sub being better again.

Although I've never met Mick in person, after reading his post I feel like we know each other. After all, when I was buying my Sea Dweller those were the EXACT thoughts going through my head. I even remarked to the salesman at the AD that I was happy to be paying a little extra for the SD, as I may someday become shark excrement and I could have every confidence that my watch would survive intact.
