Can someone expand on the term "regulation" as I see it used frequently, but it's still remains beyond my knowledge base. Exactly what they do when they regulate the watch?

That's surprising to hear. I don't necessarily blame Rolex. Certain models can sit for years without being wound or worn and abused endlessly by looky loos. Rolex movements are tough but ignorant would-be customers can still potentially damage them.

They adjust the 4 microstella nuts on the balance wheel which in turn will make the balance wheel move faster or slower and so adjust timekeeping. The microstella acts as little weights.

The store can do whatever it wants. I know that many here differ, but I would be reluctant to take a watch with such a huge problem right out of the gate. I expect more when I spend $10,000. My advice is to make sure you understand exactly what the problem was and are 100% convinced that it is not anything that will affect future performance. I don't know how much it will actually deviate the rate, but could the watch have become magnetized? Just an idea.. Luckily there's an easy cure for that too.

Yes, after a few weeks it is a warranty issue not a return, and Rolex are usually very good at getting a watch back to you within a month or so.

I can understand your feelings on the watch and the issues you are having. I have probably owned 50 Rolexes over the last 25 years and think the brand is great. I have had a few issues over the years and Rolex has always straightened them out. When I was a new collector/flipper I would get sideways over an issue and push to have the issue corrected immediately. Most times though it was a pain to deal with and my expectations were not met. Over the years though I realize that some things will break, malfunction or otherwise not function as intended and I deal with them. All will be good. Take a breath and tell the wife to do the same and let the process run its course. If in the end you are not satisfied, then figure out the next steps that work best for you and your wife. I guess my last bit of wisdom, which I use on myself from time to time, is if you did not have an issue with the watch[item] would you still want it? If the answer is yes then let Rolex make it right.

Yes there is a newer Microstella tool but it does exactly the same job but needs less skill to use it.
