Hey Guys,

Got the stitches out today and am off a walker and on a cane. This all less than 2 weeks out from a complete hip replacement.

Just very thankful!!!

Just after my last post on this thread, I experienced some excruiating pain in my groin. For the past several weeks the surgeon has been treating it (by phone only) as a torn muscle. After it not getting much better, I made the trip into his office for some x-rays and that revealed that I have a stress fracture at the top of my femur for about 2 inches down the inside of the femur. Fortunately the implant has not moved.

Today I go in for surgery to stabilize the bone with some wires and clamps.

We are not sure what caused the fracture, but it is my gut feel that perhaps the shank of the artificial hip was driven into the middle of the femur to the point where the bone was stressed to fracturing. I am not sure of this and my surgeon is considered one of the top in his field, so perhaps I just moved wrong or ???

Anyway I covet your prayers and thoughts guys. I will be in for a couple of days and will let you know how I am doing upon my return home.

Hi All,

The surgery went well. I am back home and doing fine. Just really, REALLY sore. I think he cut over the same incision he made a month ago, but maybe that is better than having two 8 inch scars.

I am mobile via wheelchair and have prognosis that things will be okay if I stay completely off of it. Zero weight on the left leg for the next 6 to 8 weeks.

I am uploading a photo of my surgeons handiwork. It is now being held together with hose clamps and baling wire. I do know that back in the 70s I repaired some cars using the same solutions and they are still on the road today! So I guess it will work for femurs!

Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts guys! I deeply appreciate it.

You should be able to receive stereo and digital tv with that array!

Hope the healing goes well

In implants, matching the size of the implant matters most.
From your picture it looks like a Stryker Accolade II press-fit vs. the TMZF that has a narrower neck.

With the Accolade II, the diameter of the upper stem must match perfectly to avoid radial femoral splitting.
But the "hose clamps" ought to let healing occur with less pain now.

BTW - not a doc myself, a good friend went to Stryker as sales guy and "learned me"

I believe my surgeon stated that he is using a 30 year Smith and Nephew device. Something about porcelain? Not really sure, but I was surprised when he said 30 year wear average. I am having both knees replaced next. Hopefully those will go better.

Anyway, just glad to have it over with and you are correct. The pain is about 30% of what it was last week. It feels great comparatively.

I'd say with that rig you can crank up the boost to 30psi Richard. 3 main bearings up from.....zero. Yep, you'll be challenging Usain Bolt. Pretty sure you'll get disqualified for unfair advantage but your secret is safe with me. I'm really glad this is all working out for you. It sounds like it's been a challenge but you're on the downhill slope!
