Clueless Rolex Owner
My wife and I went riding our motorcycles with some friends this weekend. We went to the highest volume Harley dealership in the southwest US. They have weekend parties there, bands, food, free beer and tons of bikes and people. After that we went to our local watering hole, a biker friendly place called The Underground Ice House in downtown Ft. Worth. We'll 5 of us are sitting outside and having a beer in the beautiful weather when 2 guys ride up, dismount and sit at the table next to us. I notice right off one of them is wearing a Rolex but it takes me a few minutes to notice that it's a black dial Explorer II. After 15 minutes and some BS'ing back and forth I ask," Hey man, is that an Explorer II (I am wearing my 16610 Sub)". He responds, " No, it's a Rolex". I about spit out my beer and said, "yeah I can see that, but is it the Explorer II Model". He looks at it and says, " Oh yeah, I guess it is".
Yikes......just yikes is all I can say, he was on a $50,000 custom chopper too. |

He obviously bought the watch for the name, not what's behind it.

I like to know what I own and buy in detail. I haven't gotten to the point in my life where I can buy things willy nilly without knowing anything about them. Working hard for things makes accomplishments more satisfing when you finally reach them, IMHO.

Yes. I'm the same way. I research nearly everything I buy. It's fun.

Sadly, b*obs with more money than brains buy Rolex more than any other luxury brand. You just have to learn to deal with it. Have you seen some of the truly serious threads started here lately?
It's clear to me that many rich folks that aren't true WIS don't wish to wear the same brand of watch as this guy. AP, VC and PP should be paying him. You'd never have that happen with another top brand. |

I don't understand the anger. I have a friend who bought a brand new gold day date. He is completely clueless about it. He saw it; he liked it; he bought it. He is not a trust fund baby. He's a hard working guy who can afford a 20k watch. I'm not sure how that makes him a boob, or an idiot, or a bad guy. By way of comparison, my wife doesn't know a thing about diamonds but owns a bunch of them because they look pretty and make her happy. It doesn't make her a bad person for enjoying something beautiful.

Who cares???
Why the obvious disdain? I say give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps he is not so obsessed with the details and it didn't immediately register what you were saying/asking. I say give everyone the benefit of the doubt and not assume that "he has more money than brains". Or, on the other hand, all prospective buyers should be given a written test...........including history and reference numbers...........if they fail, no rolex!!

I wouldn't be too hard on him. I was at lunch the other day and saw a guy next to me wearing a TT Date, or Datejust. I complimented him on his beautiful watch and asked which it was. He looked down at it, studied it a minute and mumbled something. I don't think he knew which one it was. I have several Rolex's and couldn't possibly tell you the model #'s. I know what they're called, but couldn't tell you which model has which type hands, movements, ect...I also have several vintage Hamiltons. Except for my Lambert, I don't know what they're called.
