Doggie Dentistry

While waiting for our pooch to be released from the veterinarian's office following a routine check-up, overheard a discussion taking place between another vet and dog owner. The veterinarian was suggesting two root canals (plus crowns) in lieu of extractions and the cost for the procedures would run approximately $2500 per tooth. He also offered the option of porcelain or gold-colored crowns which would be an additional cost. In addition, the dog had a slight overbite and an orthodontic procedure (braces) was recommended as a means of eventual correction. While the dog wouldn't be required to wear any headgear for this procedure, the estimated timeframe for completion of the treatment would take approximately 12-18 months with bi-monthly check-ups to ensure a proper bite alignment. The cost was estimated at anywhere from $2200-$3000 depending upon how long it took.

Veterinary medicine has certainly come a long ways and now it's beginning to border on pediatrics from the standpoint of overall scope and potential expenditures.

Not surprising that people would spend that on their pets. To a lot of pet owners, they are essentially just like a person in their family.

With that being said, the root canals should be taken care of if they are causing the dog pain/discomfort/potential for infection.

The overbite/crooked teeth? Yea, no thanks.

Pinstripe our first cat lived to 21 years old. In his last couple of years he needed what was essentially dialysis for animals on a quarterly basis. Let me tell you that wasn't cheap. I joke now that health care in his last 2 years cost me more than the total in his first 19.

Apparently, at least in LA, vets are encouraged to run up the charges. I can't take our dog in without getting offered all kinds of upcharges or "better" but significantly more expensive treatment options (1 shot vs 5 pills, etc). They know pet owners will pay.

We had a sick kitty once that cost us a fortune, and she ended up dying in my hands, but it was worth every cent.

Hi Seth, Sport and Simone. BC is typing on my behalf as my paws sometimes strike the wrong keys. I was rescued from an animal shelter and listed as a 'terrier mix'. My vet who raises Cairns says that I am 99.99% purebred and was probably abandoned along with my siblings by an unscrupulous breeder who ran a puppy farm and unable to procure the AKC paperwork in order to get maximum dollar for the litter. As Gomer Pyle used to say, "Shame, shame, shame".

That's an unusual name for a dog.

When I handled a police K9, it broke two of its canine teeth and had root canals and platinum caps put on. I can not put into words how cool the shiny silver full size canine teeth looked. Kinda reminded us of the old James Bond villain, Jaws.
