Glad to see this thread is semi-alive! Seems like $2,500 is the new normal for BTC. I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Ethereum yet. When it shot up to $20 I was mad I didn't get in at $5; then it shot up to $50 and I was kicking myself again...now it's above $300 and firmly the #2 cryptocurrency.

Ethereum's killer functionalities are "smart contracts" and "tokens." So, instead of coins sitting in one person's wallet or another, they can be tied to an "if-then" statement. Some people theorize it could be used for futures (if oil price is above 90 at a certain time, send the money to Carl's wallet; otherwise send the money to Steve's wallet, etc.)

This is a good intro to Ethereum that explains it far better than I am. When it was written, Ethereum's market cap was $1 billion; now it's over $28 billion. Cryptocurrency-related startups are already raising far more money via Ethereum token sales than with venture capital! Tokens are being used as shares of stock, essentially. You could also issue your own token for something as simple as tickets to a show, etc. Anyway just figured there are lots of finance guys on here and everyone should at least know what ETH is. I noticed we had our first FS post that accepts Ether this month.
