US Customs

Hello Everyone,

So I'm helping a friend to buy his wife a present from my Euro AD but I can't hand carry it and he can't make it here before he needs the watch. I'll be in London with it and wanted to ship it fedex or similar.

Has anyone done this and if i wanted to pay the customs because obviously he needs it how do we manage this with confidence so as not to make a giant mess?

Thanks much

You can give your courier company power of attorney for customs when you ship. Elect to bill your courier account or have customs bill the recipient. The courier will work customs for you. Shouldn't be a problem.

I'm curious, can you get the VAT refunded if you ship it vs carry it back yourself?

If I take it from Serbia to London (need to be there thankfully) I stamp the VAT form and ship from London. How much would the duty be? 3.1%?

The US duty is based on material, size, and movement.

I was advised, right or wrong, by a London AD that US Customs may X-ray packages looking for things like watches coming into the country without paying duty. Even if you intended to or did pay duty, things could get complicated.

Perhaps, UPS could handle this correctly. You would want to have the watch both insured and duty paid.

Correct.

The importer and broker (Fed EX) should handle the paperwork for you and collect any duty that is due.

FedEx (or anyone else) will insist on knowing what the contents are (the only things that get a pass are documents). As the importer, they have the right to inspect the contents before they accept it for shipment. There will be no mystery when it lands at the US port of entry.

All the paperwork needed to easily clear US customs will be done before the courier seals the package.
