That the guys wore rolexes as well or in addition to the omega.... so what. Were I going I'd still wear my daily watch and maybe a few for friends as well. GMT's continue to be very popular among military pilots and I am sure will be for many years.
With regard to the performance of the current Daytona's on future space flights. I read somewhere that NASA's requirements were that any watch needed to be manual wind. They were not convinced that continued usage/accuracy could be mantained in flight with an automatic watch due to zero gravity. Plus the saphire crystal was replaced with a glass composite material that would not fracture into small pieces in case of an accident.

I know that Dayton's then were manual wind so that was not an issue in the decision making process. I guess with zero gravity the rule would still be either manual wind or quarts. It is unlikley we will ever see a modern daytona flight approved as the official NASA timekeeping piece.
