Combinations - Fluted/Jubilee Smooth/Oyster, etc

I'm deeply researching my first Rolex. I've read, read, and read here ... and then read some more. One of the big differences I see here with regard to personal preferences is the bezel/bracelet combinations.

It seems many here prefer the Fluted bezel and the Jubilee bracelet, but the knock on that combination is that it is too dressy and not sporty enough.

Others here prefer the Smooth bezel and the Oyster bracelet, but the knock on that combination is that both are subject to scratching and will show signs of wear.

Still, others try to combine the two with a Smooth bezel and Jubilee bracelet, or the Fluted bezel and Oyster bracelet, but the knock on those combinations is that they just don't fit.

I'm torn and don't know what the heck to do. What say you? What is your preferred combination and why? I really appreciate your thoughts.

Went for this. The silver dial is, IMHO, more 70s than dressy...

I think you've hit the nail on the head and correctly identified the choices. It really comes down to personal preference. I think to many, the classic DJ will always be a fluted bezel on jubilee bracelet. But, that is a little more on the dress side. It may also depend on how many watches you own or plan to own. A more dressy date just may be perfect for work if you have something more causal/sporty to also pick from.

Same here. Jubilee is too dressy/formal. Also kind of reminds of an old man's watch.

Fluted on Oyster for me too, nice balance between the traditional signifier and the more modern sporty.

Get what you like. I happen to like the smooth/jubilee combo...a lot.

I'll definitely go fluted/jubilee when I get a DJ. I just don't think the oyster looks right on it. To me, the DJ is more of a dress watch than the Sub, GMT, Exp, or SD. No reason to try and make it a sport watch with the smooth bezel and oyster bracelet.

Fluted on jubilee is my choice. Sporty and dressy. Most comfortable Rolex I've ever owned.

To be honest go with whichever one you like the look of better, that's all that matters

That being said, my personal preference is #1. Oyster + Smooth Bezel followed by #2. Oyster + Fluted Bezel (I think the jubilee is too "old school" looking.)

What reference are you considering? I think all 4 combos are beautiful, but some look better on certain references. Try on all the possible combos and choose the one that appeals to you.

I wear plain t-shirts and tennis shoes when not at work so I think that the DJ fluted with oyster bracelet is perfect way to casually add some element to my attire. It is at home in t-shirt & jeans, polo & shorts, or a suit

I used to think smooth bezel on oyster was a no-no, but check out photos of Seth's (Superdog's) DJ41. It's really nice.

It's definitely a wide variety of opinions.

Not long ago I would've said Fluted/Jubilee and Smooth/oyster were the way to go.
The Skydweller has really changed the traditional norms with its Fluted/Oyster combo as the only option unless one goes for a Leather strap.

Grady has demonstrated very well how a Smooth/Jubilee combo works superbly.
However I would posit that the End-links in his pic depict the very best execution of a Jubilee bracelet.
I'm not convinced the DJ41 with the design of its Jubilee end-links is the best way to go. It's almost like Rolex are trying to make it somewhat like a President bracelet and the overall execution is off a little.

In summary it's going to be an Oyster/Fluted combo.
Probably a Skydweller though

Old man's watch? LoL. I'm going to be 35 soon. My watch guy SoHAIS sourcing me a pre owned DJ41/fluted/blue stick dial/jubilee. That blue with the fluted and jubilee is an amazing look. BTW I also have a 114060 and BLNR. Its for me to get a DJ.

Well I AM 67 years old. I think the fluted/jubilee is the way to go. Given that I wanted the MOP diamond dial I felt that was the best choice. Not even sure if that dial is offered with any other bezel/bracelet combo. I bought it to celebrate my retirement so I wanted something special and a little different.

I'm currently torn between a DJ41 or an Explorer. Either way it's smooth bezel and oyster bracelet for me!
