Who are you people?!?!

I can't take much more of this. These watches are incredible. The Daytona is the best looking watch I've ever seen... but who can afford such a watch?

I do fairly well, $140k+ salary, BMW, boat, Harley, House... yet I can't justify spending $10k+ on a watch.

Who are all of you buying these watches, because the pictures posted here don't look like you are rolling in the money. Are you drug dealers, inheritance brats, or posers buying used Rolex's to show off?

I hate you all... except the posers because I could do that but prefer not to buy something that keeps food off the table or my children from attending good colleges.

Welcome to TRF Jimmy. With the possible exceptions of your house and Harley (and even these are dicey in today's world!) almost no other chattle/asset will keep its value the way a SS Daytona will. In 20 years, it's likely the Daytona would be worth more than almost any 20 year-old BMW.

Well, I can't justify a boat or Harley b/c that takes away from my watches!!!!

Priorities I guess.

Agreed

In uncertain times a diversity of hard assets is a very good idea.

Compare the increase in value of an 116520 SS Daytona bought just over a year ago ($7900MSRP(then) to $9925MSRP or $11-12K gray(now)) to almost any stock bought a year ago, doesn't even need to be WaMu

leave now, or you will find a way to justify dropping $$$ on a daytona. these watch forums do nothing but stimulate horological cravings!

welcome to TRF!
I don't have a Harley, a boat and no BMW
I work for my living
and I have a Rolex
and I plan on buying another one soon!
And I am perfectly happy without a boat or BMW or Harley!
But that is just what is on my mind.

If you can't buget $140K/year to afford a $10-15K Daytona.
It is a toy that tells time like your HD is a toy to ride.
HD = $15-20 K and 10 years down the road it is worth less than $10K
Daytona = $10-15K 10 years down the road (the way price increases have been coming) easily worth more than $15K.
Bugeting and priorities my friend.
IMHO get rid of the boat and enjoy the watch.
If you really want one!

Are you drug dealers, inheritance brats, or posers buying used Rolex's to show off?
Is your boat fast?
(I'll buy your boat if it can get from Columbia to Miami FAST with 500 KG of extra weight)

I don't think a watch can be considered an investment... put the money in a CD and it will be worth more than your watch in 10 years.... trust me...

My toys are just that... toys... A watch is a toy not an investment. I guess it's just how much someone is willing to spend on toys. I know some would say a Harley isn't worth what they cost.

I'm not insulting anyone here. Sorry if I did that. I love the watch and want one. I guess I was just trying to see if everyone here was rich or if it's like Harleys than even regular folks buy expensive items they are passionate about.

Nice entrance, pal.

Right......now you've got a $140K+ salary, a BMW, a boat, a Harley, a house.....

One question: Wanna swap?

Cheers - JJ

May be few here are posers but what do I care.. I am here for fun and to gain some knowledge on watches.

There may be exceptions but I suspect most us here who have collection of pricey Rollies are either very rich businessmen or are in their 50s+ having enough disposable cash to spend on every cool Rolex out there.
I am in the third category - In 30s with modest income but dont own BMW, Harley or a expensive home. What do I do with my money? I am an early adoptor of almost every cool gadget out there in the market (ipod, iphone, Wii, PS3, Flatscreens etc..) My wife thinks that I am a spendthrift because of that and my two pre-owned Rollies but thats me.

Nah don't call me doctor frostie i am just a normal guy

Studying in greek public universities sucks big time but investing in private british colleges is one of the best things to do here in greece in terms of knowledge and worldwide recognition of your degree. Hope that my investment will help me find a good job and spend more money on rolexes

Jimmy, Welcome to the forum.
I know what you mean $10,000 sounds a lot, but the UK equivalent of £5,700 sounds a lot better.
I think.

AGREE with you on the value part David.. But still you can't get the value part to reality once you consider selling your watch.....

topcat30093...

that's a good point... are the watches less expensive to purchase overseas? Should I purchase one while in Europe and just wear it on the plane home to avoid duty? I'm hitting Amsterdam in November for the METs boat show.

Most of us are regular people who happen to choose to use our discretionary income on a Rolex, instead of a boat. I wish I had a boat, but wouldn't get rid of my watch for one. Again, priorities. And you're right, NONE of them are investments, typically.
