Upgrade Explorer to Date Adjust?

Hi,

I've had my Explorer for about 18 months now and absolutely love it.
I wanted a plain looking Rolex without a date.

BUT i find myself looking at the watch for the date every now and then, so I'm thinking about upgrading to a Date Adjust with a Black face, so it sort of looks like an Explorer without the hands and numbers on the dial.

I've noticed there are several different sizes. The explorer is 39mm, the larger date adjust is 41mm.

Do you think I'll notice much difference and secondly will a Rolex dealer do a part exchange?

I'm UK based.

Many thanks.

They are in two very different categories and you will notice that after you own it for just a day.

The explorer is far easier to read with the numbers and different hands; the explorer is much more intuitive and instant. Also the explorer is far less “bling.”

Not that the DJ is hard to read or overly “bling”

But they are simply very different watches.

Nothing is more convenient to see the time and date than a wristwatch. That's why for me the watch has to have a date that I always need to consult and the phone must be taken out of pocket, turned on and look for a date that usually always hide among so many inconos. I think it's great that you buy a Rolex with a date.

Go to a dealer and try on a DJ back to back with your Explorer. You should quickly get a sense for what you like on your wrist.

Don't make any moves until you are confident you know what you're after.

I had the same thoughts but PCL on DJ 41 is a deal breaker for me

The lack of a date is the only reason I don’t wear an Explorer everyday, although I’m not into the current version of the DateJusts, either. I’d get something older, like a 16200.

EXP II might be too sporty? The Explorer I has a great understated quality to it.

PCL?

Oyster bracelet sure, but the Jubilee shows no marks due to the small curved links.

This, after 15 years continuous daily wear for all activities. Never serviced. Never polished. Never taken off...

I hear you, and it’s refreshing to see someone wearing a Rolex as it was intended, but I’m under the impression that the OP wants something a bit more understated, which is why he bought an Exp I in the first place.

For me, I avoid PCLs because of the shine, rather than the scratches. I could care less about scratches.

I’ve worn a plain DateJust, fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet for many years. It looks almost like new, been serviced once, and is the most comfortable watch I own. The watch has an element of understated elegance the I feel the Explorer lacks.

I'll do just that, but I haven't seen any with the black dial and plain bezel in the AD's i've passed.

I want something understated, which I feel the Explorer is.

I also wonder whether they would custom fit hands from the explorer into a Date Adjust if I asked them to?

The DJ 41 might be a good choice, but I would not trade the Explorer. Can you justify buying or saving for another Rolex? If you trade your Explorer, you may end up loosing money. You can also get a more affordable watch with date such as Tissot and save money towards your next Rolex purchase...

Date Adjust is a misnomer for DateJust. The DJ41 diameter is really 39.5mm so there won't be much difference. What the dealer will do is up to the individual dealer. Mine has a policy of trading up at initial sale value. No idea what will happen across the pond or at other dealers than the one I use. Ask them and you'll get your answer.

There are some phrases in your initial inquiry that give me the sense you should not let your Explorer go. They are:

I recommend keeping the Explorer. Check the date at the beginning of your day, and make a point of recalling it from memory throughout your day. I don't mean this to sound flippant.

Tough call. They are both great, but they are very different watches. The Explorer is a true sports watch and the DJ has a lot of polished surfaces. I would go with the one that fits your style of dress better. If you tend to wear dress shirts, then go DJ. If you wear jeans and polos, then maybe Explorer. Good luck deciding!

I tend to agree with some of the other members. Sounds like you'll regret off loading the Explorer. I personally love the Mercedes hands as well. Maybe look at your phone first think in the morning and make an effort to remember the date. Will become second nature after a few days.
