18038 Lume coming off.

Hi all,
I am more than a little bummed. Some lume has come off the dial on my 1987 18038. The watch has never been serviced so it is long past due. I have spoken to some friends who have Rolex and they have said the RSC in New York is the way to go. I’ll call them Monday to see what it all entails. I was hoping for some tips. I was going to take some pictures of the watch befor it is sent. I have added two links to the bracelet. Do I need to remove them? Any suggestions?

Same year same model here. I sent mine in to NY RCS in Oct. came back amazing. My hands were fine though, no glow but not coming off either. Before and after pictures would be great.

I’ve read some threads on here of very bad experiences with the RSC in NY. I don’t live in the US so can say personally. I’m sure i’ve seen a lot more recommendations for the RSC in Dallas though.

+ 1 for before and after pictures please!!! On a similar note as mentioned by Liam above, I had a good experience at Dallas RSC where Rolex repaired my Explorer crown under warranty and recommended no polishing as the watch looked still new. My NYC RSC experience was limited to bracelet adjustment while waiting, no issues there either. However, there are some indications of other members having few challenges at NYC RSC. Do your research.

It sounds like you a great experience. What did services did they end up doing?
Would you made sharing the costs of the services?

I have used both Dallas and New York RSC and have been good with either. I would call both and see which you like better based on your conversation. Ask for them to send you the kit to send the watch in and off you go. Good luck.

You could also try an independent watch maker as their service prices are typically better and we have a few board members here that are qualified to do the work.

They are likely to give you a service replacement dial, which will look new, but not be inexpensive. It will also not have tritium if they do.

Sorry, I thought you said hands not dial. Yes they will have to replace the dial with a different dial. They told me they do not have that dial any longer, I had some pitting (not noticeable to the naked eye) so I declined that service. They might want to replace hands with the dial. I did get a new crown and new crystal put on. Break down is as follows:

Total: $1278.00
Total Selected - Necessary: $1098.00
Total Selected - Optional: $180.00
Total Approved: $1278.00
Crown : $170.00 Necessary
Water Test : $0.00 Necessary
Gasket : $0.00 Necessary
Ultrasonic Cleaning : $0.00 Necessary
Complete Service : $928.00 Necessary
Crystal : $180.00 Optional

I hope this helps!
It's a beautiful watch and was worth every penny.

Thanks for posting the pricing. The lume is rolling around between the face and the crystal. I am looking forward to getting he work done. They are beautiful watches even after 30years.
