Fedex Shipping Insurance

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but I recently sold a watch here on the forum, and I went into a Fedex store to ship it. I asked for insurance to cover the value of the watch ($5,000) and was told they only provide coverage up to $1,000.

I was somewhat surprised as their website indicated otherwise. I called another Fedex office in another city and was told the same thing.....$1,000. So, I wound up using USPS.

Some sellers on here use Fedex insured shipping, so I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.

I think most people, along with myself, use a third part for insurance. I ship via Parcel Pro. When using them I can ship via FedEx or UPS with Parcel Pro insurance. I think they cover up to $50,000 in most situations. This is very different. You are not using the carriers insurance, which I believe actually isn’t insurance at all. It’s more of a “declared value” of some sort that they make you jump through hoops to get.

ParcelPro is your friend. They cover up to $50K, I believe. Hassle free, easy and very reasonable pricing.

Only Parcel Pro for me. If you buy insurance for a large sum, it attracts the attention of nefarious individuals and packages disappear.

Interesting. When I purchased a watch from DavidSW recently I asked the same question about insurance since I was shipping him my trade (FedEx). He said insurance was included. I never asked anymore about it but I wonder if it was in fact only covered to $1K and David was taking a risk in the process? He also advised me not to say what was in the package or what it was worth - as said above, I assume not wanting to draw attention to it.

^^^ USPS Registered Mail is THE way when you are shipping extremely expensive items. Its the platinum standard. There is a accountability log to the package every step of its journey. It is handled a lot different than every other kind of USPS parcels.

I'm no expert but I'm willing to bet that when an AD ships using USPS mail they have a separate insurance policy covering these items. USPS Registered mail is a fine method but I would strongly encourage anyone who is relying on the INSURANCE part of USPS mail to really read the fine print. I'm quite sure that these AD's are NOT using USPS insurance with that mail service.

It cost me $96 to send the watch overnight from Mass to California. That was through USPS with 5k insurance. I didn't think that was too bad. It arrived in just over 24 hours.

UPS was quoting me almost 200.

I will check with Parcel Pro for the next one.....thanks for all the input!

Parcel Pro would have been around $40 fully insured depending on weight. Parcel Pro also gives you the option to ship Fed Ex or UPS. Prices differ depending on carrier but at pretty close.

Did he send you a shipping label? Then he probably used Parcel Pro.

I shipped a watch around the same distance with 8k insurance recently UPS via parcel pro and it was right around 70. So I would imagine yours would have been maybe 60 bucks or so

He uses a third party insurer. Not Parcel Pro, but one of their competitors.

Parcel Pro is really intended for businesses, or at least very active hobbyists shipping at least a couple items per month. Some individuals have slipped through the cracks and gotten accounts, though.

Parcel Pro uses both UPS and FedEx. FedEx has a higher rate than UPS but its not that much more.

My personal property insurance actually covers shipping / until I take the item off my policy.

I then ship overnight using my works fedex account for like 10 bucks.

Once it arrives I then remove it from my policy.
