Sub Date caseback openned by hand

Has anyone experienced this before?
Today I accidentally managed to open the caseback of my Sub Date by hand. Not sure how long it had not been tightly screwed down. I was frightened. Fortunately to my eye the movement looks still clean. The watch has been my daily beater since 2003, though recently other Rolexes get more wrist. Since it has never been serviced I now intend to bring it to the RSC.

Just close it up, have a watchmaker tighten it and good to go.
If it runs fine no need to go to Koln and pay 800 for a service.

If this was my watch I would have it serviced. The rotor axle is quite worn and the rotor is scraping against the outer edge of the movement. Even if it runs fine now this causes "brake dust" that gets everywhere and parts gets worn quicker.

Beautiful photos!!! If it were mine I would get it serviced as it’s been 15 years and if the back just popped off on its own, who knows if their is any early water damage behind what you can see from humidity/moisture getting into an inadequately sealed case

Interesting, I don’t think I’ve heard of that happening before.

As others have said, I’d have it serviced. Have you been swimming with it?

Its fine. Screw it back on. Get one of those sticky balls or a cheap rolex caeback tool set to further tighten and problem solved. But since its been 15 years i would just have it serviced and good for 15 more

I noticed this as well. Looks like it is due for a service.

Not swimming, but sometimes showering, washing... with it.

The case back should have been torqued down correctly so I'm not sure how it became loose??

Never understood this approach. The hesitation to service & spend ~$800 on a watch that brand new present date cost ~$8000. He has owned it 15yrs. The service cost equates to ~$53 for each year of ownership. We spend more on oil change on a yearly basis for our vehicles.

Time for service, as others mentioned, due to rotor wear, etc.

I did not see the wear caused by the rotor, so yes in this case a service does make sense.

Normally if a watch runs fine I don't think a fixed service interval should be adhered to.

A Rolex movement does not have to deal with high temperatures comparable with car engines which degrades the oil.
I don't know any car owner who lets his engine disassemble completely by the dealer to check if there is some wear on the main bearings and subsequently close it up again.

Cost of a Rolex overhaul is reasonable enough, missing your watch for eight weeks is another story
