I had heard of Rolex from my Uncles when I was in middle school, and thus began an early fascination....Bond solidified the fascination to a reality lol.

I was watching Columbo (Double Exposure, 1973) on my DVR with Robert Culp in it, and in the scene in the TV Monitor room, where Culp is fiddling with the monitor, you can see his wrist and I think it's a PM GMT Master with Jubilee bracelet. Here's a screen shot with cropped blow up. Evidently Culp was a Rolex fan.

My mom bought my dad a two tone Datejust when I was around 12. Remember seeing the box and ROLEX on dial, and my dad saying Wow a Rolex... I could see even at that age the quality. From that moment on I knew Rolexes were a big deal. Got to try it on!

Then, one Saturday afternoon in 1967, my young face pressed against the glass, I saw it, the GMT MASTER smiling at me from the local jewellers window, and I knew it was 'the one'.
Leap forward to 1972, Bond St. London, and I slipped it nervously onto my wrist
and haven't stopped looking at a GMT face since.
............... Just to tell the time, obviously.

What was your earliest Rolex 'sighting'?
Great story.
Do you still have it?

National Geographic ads is where I first noticed them, but despite watching Magnum PI and earlier Bond movies as a kid, I don't think I really noticed a Rolex until I saw this in the theatre as a 10 year old:

edit** Actually, I think I may be wrong about that. It was probably this on VHS:

Thanks,
No, chopped it in for a newer model. I always lusted after the flat crystal and the
updated movement, plus I got a brilliant deal!
If a new 'coke' is released, I'll do the same.
I'm not too fussed about the 'vintage look'.

First ever sighting/knowledge of Rolex for me was in 1979. I was in grade 2 and a classmate of mine went for a vacation to NYC for a week with his parents.

He came back from vacation and during show and tell, shows his fake Rolex his parents picked him up somewhere around SOHO. The "ROLEX" was actually spelt "ROLlEX" on the dial and I believe it was a simple OP. Nothing fancy.

I had no idea what was the significance of the watch, but a few of the other kids knew and the teacher certainly did.

He wore that faker to school for the next 2 weeks before it broke down and stopped working. LOL.

........................and that was my introduction to the brand. LOL

Roger that, sir. I’m exactly the same.
