Problem with a pre-owned DJ 16220 I bought.

Hello,

I originally posted this in the vintage section, but since technically a 16220 is not vintage, and also to reach a broader audience, I'm reposting here.


I have a problem and I would like to know what you guys would suggest I do.

I bought a 1999 DJ from a seemingly reputable dealer in Germany (I'm in The Netherlands).

The watch comes with a service box and all papers and it is in excellent, hardly worn, unpolished condition.

But it arrived dead. No shaking or manual winding starts it. Even after many turns of manual winding the feel does not get any stiffer, so my initial guess is a broken mainspring.

I talked to the seller and he claims that he checked it and it worked perfectly when he sent it, and gives me three options:

1) Clearly, I can send it back for a refund.
2) Send back to him for repair and he will send it back to me in working condition. He covers the costs of shipping both ways. But it is clear that he will just replace the mainspring if that is the reason for the fault. In this case his original 12 months warranty still stands.
3) Take to my local independent guy for repair. I checked with him and he will charge me 275 euros for a service (includes the mainspring) with his (local to me) 12 months warranty. In this case the seller agrees to cover half of it.

Now, what would you do ?

I'd either go with the refund or full service and split the cost.

The better option would be to have you guy repair it. I don't know, call me crazy but if I bought a watch, received it and it wasn't working, that's not a great way to start. Me personally, I'd send it back and go for a full refund.

Full refund would be the way to go. If you’ve been sent an older watch that doesn’t work... refund. Best of luck.

Sounds like a stand up guy. Some a-hole probably threw the box around during shipping. 1 or 2 if you really like the watch. I wouldn't pay any more. Why should you?

Option 1 seems like your safest bet. Lots of other DJs around that you can buy instead.

I'm sure you've done your research to buy this 16220 and really loving it, the hunt for vintage is a part of the joy.
Mainspring is a fairly straightforward repair.
I would have a reputable local watchmaker do the job and ask for reimbursement (or part of it) from the seller.
This way you have control of the work, no shipping delays or mishaps and everyone walks away happy. If you are not 100% loving this watch or there are further problems with the watch, I'd go with a full refund.

unless you got a screaming deal on it or this was a super rare model/combo and hard to come across, refund and look for another watch

In the first instance, I might ask my local guy to open and look. Get a photo. If the watch is perfect in every other way and if it is a simple fix, then come to an arrangement with the seller. If the movement is in a bad way, then send back for full refund. There are plenty of DJ around that will be in perfect condition. PM if you need help.

If you love the watch and it is a simple fix go that route otherwise I would return it for a refund.

Go for a refund . Maybe he has a another watch in newer condition and you might be able to work something out.

A lot of DJ out there in the world .

Don't know how good of a deal you got or how much you like that particular model / dial configuration...... assuming great deal otherwise would probably have my watchmen fix it and split repair costs (good idea if going this route to check that repair is as straight forward as you think it is). Probably easiest route is just to return for full credit.

One last question, if you don't mind...

In a case like this, should I expect the seller to cover the ship-back costs or is it understood to be on me ?
