Rolex Cellini Time

Any love for this reference (50505)? I’m thinking about adding a dress watch to my lineup. I currently have a white dial milgauss (116400), a 42mm black dial explorer 2 (216570), and a black dial ceramic sub in yellow gold (116618ln).

With that said, I’m interested in the white dial Cellini time in rose gold. I like the simplicity of this Cellini model over the date, dual time, or moon phase. What are your thoughts about this piece? Anyone own one and if so please share some wrist shots. Anyone have a suggestion for a competitor’s piece?

The Rolex is around 15k msrp, but I’m seeing them for sale grey market/used from around 8k-10k. They seem like a good value at 10k and below.

Thanks in advance!

My requirements for a dress watch are basically

1)PM
2)thin
3)transparent case back to see the beautiful movement

The current Rolex cellini line doesn't satisfy 2 & 3.

In short Rolex has never been strong in this category. JLC probably provides better value at this price range.

I’ve been looking at this watch, too.

It’s a beauty, but a little large for a dress watch in my opinion. 39mm is approaching sports watch dementions. I like dress watches more around 36mm.

Beautiful dial and hands, though.

I love the Cellini. But, I have no real need for a dress watch so it is not worth the cost to me. I think it is kind of cool that Rolex will now always get the advertising of Obama wearing it in his official presidential portrait. That had to be a happy in the Rolex marketing office when that was unveiled to the public.

Hey JayAK. Let me just say that you have excellent taste in watches. I also have the white Milgauss and the black 42mm Explorer 2! Additionally I recently posted about the same Cellini! I have seen the Cellini's used in the $8,000 to $10,000 range, so I think it's definitely doable. While I'm still l'm still thinking about it, I am leaning toward the JLC Master Control with date for my dress watch. Good luck with your search!

That’s fair! I really do wish that Rolex had put a transparent back on this model.
I haven’t handled the watch yet, how thick is it?

I don’t disagree that it is a little large, though I think modern trends are pushing for larger and larger pieces.

Very true, what an endorsement! In my line of work a dressier watch makes sense for me, I always feel a bit out of place with the sports watches.

Thanks! Great minds think alike!!
I’ll check out your thread. I do like JLC, I wouldn’t be opposed to one.

I can't speak for this model, but I have to say that I like the Cellini line for the exact opposite reason I love the Submariner (no date) and the Explorer I. If the Submariner proper and the Explorer are the most Rolex-y Rolexes, the Cellini line represents the least Rolex-y Rolexes. One of my favorite dress watches of all time is a Rolex Cellini, the Prince in white gold:

Get a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Classy and better value for your money than the Cellini. They also got a ton of variants for this model - from a simple hour dial all the way to crazy complications that can drain anybody's wallet

I do like the look of those, perhaps I will explore them a little more. JLC is definitely a possibility. I’ll be in Vegas in a few weeks and will try some on.

JLC certainly seems to have a lock on the dress watch segment. If you're going to be in Vegas you may as well wait and see everything in person. Go see Judy and Efren at the JLC boutique. They are fantastic. My wife and I almost walked out the door with his and her JLC's, but I didn't want to make an impulse buy. I've got to do more research and pondering. But if I do ultimately decide to go JLC I will probably give them a call.

Even though JLC is the go to brand, I totally get the appeal of the Cellini line. For me it's new JLC or used Cellini. The Cellini definitely gets cache points for President Obama wearing one. Always cool when a President wears a particular watch. I'm curious if Rolex has seen a slight uptick in sales because of that.

Yes, make sure to try it on. I like the brand and the idea of the reverso a lot. The ability to reverse the watch face to see only the movement interested me. However, when I tried it on, I hated it. Sometimes a watch just doesn’t look good on your wrist, especially the rectangular shape.

Good call, there is a JLC boutique right in the Wynn. I’ll give it a serious look. Do JLCs hold up well over time? I need to do more research on them. I’m confident in the longevity and ruggedness of a Rolex, but truth be told I’ve never purchased anything besides Rolex and Tudor.

Aside from my lineup mentioned earlier, I have purchased for my girlfriend/her current lineup:
- 36mm two tone (rg) datejust, jubilee bracelet
- 34mm two tone (yg) oyster no date, oyster bracelet
- 26mm brushed SS oyster no date, oyster bracelet
- 36mm SS Tudor Oyster Prince(date), jubilee style bracelet

I just keep buying Rolex/Tudor... I really should branch out, but I’m just so confident in the brand that I don’t ever stray. Maybe this will be the watch.

Do you have any experience with JLC?

That’s a very fair point. I’ll keep that in mind!

One more thing about JLC: They don't hold value as well as a Rolex. This doesn't really come into play if you want to keep you watch forever, but if you get the inclination that you might flip it, buying on the second hand market will give you a better bang for the buck. This is one of the reason why the present such a great value (when you buy second hand).

This is the same issue you run into with the Cellini line.

Before I purchased my Cellini Prince, I looked at the Cellini Time for a dressier watch. I decided against it for three simple reasons:

1) No deployant clasp. I really dislike tang straps.

2) Cost. A NOS Prince is half the price of a new Cellini Time and looks nothing like any other modern Rolex. The Cellini line now uses Oyster cases. Plus the exhibition case back on the Prince. I think the Prince is a better value IF one likes the style.

3) I decided I did not want an automatic for my dress watch. Winding the Prince and setting the time is a small pleasure before wearing.

I went to a Rolex dealer in Overland Park, KS today and they had several of the newer Cellini models. Not a bad looking watch!
