This is fantastic, a lovely NOS. I purchased my Pepsi from DSW in 2013, post Afghan deployment. Absolutely love the watch and am amazed at the price climb.

Wow! Even with the stick dial and 3186 movement, two grails for collectors, that’s some price! I’m not a collector so prices like that make my head spin.

Its not just that it is NOS that makes it 25k. Its NOS; 3186 movement; stick dial; and the last year of production. That there is a unicorn.

IMO, it is because the new ceramic style bezel inserts will never develop their own unique characteristics like the original aluminum inserts did. Add to that the versatility of the 16710 and it's truly a winner.

Good move. 16710 can take certain jubilee bracelets (check end links and pins) as well as oyster bracelet plus 3 insert options. 6-in-1! Prices are up across the board for both references. Buy before they go up more, IMO.

Maybe, but sorry, I'm not buying into the 3186 hype. There are many very nice GMT II models available for much less than one with that movement. (1993 pictured below.)

Cool bezel removing tool you have. Is that specific to watches? It kind of looks like a bike tire iron. I need something like that.

In the world of collectibles, normally the first year of production always seem to be coveted the most by collectors.

Gmt 16710

Lots of great points already covered by the posters above. I'd also like to note that the 16710 brings versatility of choosing between PCL and non-PCL bracelets, since the jubilees have PCL's while the oysters feature brushed center links. Great way to lean sporty or dressy.

I'd echo the above advice to skip the 3186 movement. With prices for those reaching $15k+, it's too much premium for a small technical improvement IMO. Instead, pay a premium for a late 90's/early 00's specimen in top-notch condition that's part of a full set.

Mine's a U-serial. More enabling:

Here is the link for the blue opening tool. It is perfect because it will not scratch your watch. And it pops the bezel off effortlessly. The black instrument is just a pair of tweezers that I use to position the spring.

This is a very interesting read. Much like the OP, I am looking into buying a GMT also and was wondering about the difference in pricing.

For me, I'm leaning towards a 116710 but also pre-owned. The pricing seems to be just right on those models for excellent condition stock only a few years old. Though you have to hunt pretty good to find them!

Question - Why have the GMT 16710 retained/grown in value? It looks like I can pick up a nice 16610 for around $6.5k but the GMT 16710 watches are all $7.5+?

Thanks!
Well you're not going to find either brand new, so that's a non issue.

The 16710 for whatever reason is just a little more popular.

I think the hype surrounding the small run of 3186 movements in the 16710s pumped a little bit of craze into the more common 3185 movements. I also think the small dial variations and nuances between different serial numbers and years, created a little more enthusiasm and interest among collectors.

They are both fantastic watches. I prefer submariners, but I do think the 16710 will remain a little more "collectible", especially with the 2018 release of the updated SS pepsi GMT.

Great day for a 16710 BLRO, although mine is looking decidedly VIRO today (violet rouge)
