For some, yes, but I find that unfortunate for the hobby. I'm sure 90% of us are tired of the posts about which watch will best hold its value or maximize return. But the fact is it clouds all of our judgment and factors into wear decision, watches to buy or flip, and detracts from the passion for horology from non-financial aspects as a whole.

I'm actually looking forward for the day when we all expect our watches to depreciate and buy them to wear. It will happen again, just not sure when.

I would be highly skeptical of anyone who purports to project a blanket rule for any model Rolex, let alone all Rolex watches 5, 10 or 15 years down the road. And in my opinion, if you cannot afford to loose money in that scenario, you should not purchase it.

Unlike some believe, Rolex is not a "guaranteed investment." There is no hard and fast rule. It is like any thing else. Depends on

1. How good of a deal you get when you buy it.

2. For some models, whether you paid retail, or got a good deal from a trusted seller. See "#1 above.

3. Whether you take care of it.

4. Whether you have to pay to service it before you sell it.

5. What the economy is like when you sell it.

6. Whether Rolex is still in high demand.

7. Whether the Rolex model you chose is in high demand.

8. Whether people even buy mechanical watches 15 years from now, let alone collect them.

9. Whether you invest the resources to sell it yourself, or sell it to someone else does and will logically charge you for that service.

10. How bad of a deal someone else gets when you sell it.

Having said all that. If you have the disposable income, the experience of owning a Rolex is worth the money. And if Rolex continues to protect its brand, it has a better chance than others of holding its value.

But if you are more concerned with not loosing money, I would avoid this passion.

Absolutely agree.

I expect it. And buy Rolex for the experience. Better to expect it and have it not happen than the reverse.

With the current economy all bets are off!! If anyone can predict a “good investment” we wouldn’t be here

Great response, what do you think the watch industry will be like in the future? I'm 22 but myself and a couple of my friends still aspire to purchase rolex's and other watches
