Rolex Explorer II Fake?
I was wondering if you guys could help me take a look at this 1984 Rolex Explorer II 16550. The writing seems to be a little off and there doesn’t seem to be sufficient spacing between the hand base and the Explorer II on the dial. Any help would be appreciated.....thanks!

Dial and hands are no good.
So even if the rest is legit, it would be a pass for me. |

The font on the bezel looks off to me too. The numerals look too thick.

The dial has definitely been refinished or replaced with an aftermarket dial. The bezel font on the 16550's is more blocky and squarish (different from the 16570's) so that aspect is okay, but you can clearly see that the bezel engravings have been repainted/re-enamaled. I would probably pass just because of the dial unless it's an incredible bargain.

As NK mentioned, the bezels are a bit different on the earlier 16550. It looks OK from here, apart from the amateur color-fill job. However a 16550 without it's original dial is sort of like a Red Submariner without it's original dial, on a smaller scale (read: severely diminished desirability and value). Even if you wanted to restore it, you will probably have a hard time finding an original 16550 dial and hand-set. If/when you do, they won't be cheap.

Rolex Explorer II Fake?
Possibly repainted dial? Or very good fake. The “explorer ii” looks almost just as bolded as “rolex”
And the Swiss font at the very bottom of the dial is all wrong Edit: it might be the photo reflecting but I’m pretty sure the Lume plot settings should be black, the pic you provided doesn’t seem to be Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Wow ... the fill in those bezel markers is “interesting” to say the least.

No, on the white-dial 16550 the hour marker surrounds are white gold. White-dial w/ black surrounds came later on the 16570. |

Evidence
If its a fake, it would be an old one since it is worn.
