Rolex Service Center Replace Dial on Sub 168000

I sent my Rolex Sub 168000 which I bought in 1987 to RSC NY for service and they told me that they will have to replace the dial & hands as required part of service. My old dial tridium has been flaking and it is affecting the watch function. The new dial & hands will cost over $550 plus service of $700 including taxes total of $1,500. I ask Rolex if I can keep my old dial. They told me that I will have to pay additional $300 bucks to keep the old dial. I was surprised because of this extra charge of $300 just to keep my old dial. Is keeping my old dial worth it even paying extra for it? Does anyone in the forum have the same experience? I need your advice.

My advice?? Tell them “no thank you”, and send it to LA Watchworks for a second opinion.

Pay to keep what's yours..Ridiculous. I'd decline and take it somewhere else.

When you say the watch is "flaking" can you see loose material inside your watch or is this the RSC telling you this? If that is the case, it could get in the movement and have adverse effects to the watch. An independent watchmaker may be able to seal the current lume to prevent this from continuing to happen. It may be worth a few phone calls to some of the watchmakers here for their thoughts.

Yup, it’s true.

I just had a dial swap and RSC called it a “trade in.” If I wanted to keep the dial I’d lose the trade in value and have to pay more for the new dial. The said watch is a Datejust, so I let RSC do the “trade in.”

But you have a Submariner. It’s more collectible. You should keep the old dial in case you or a future vintage owner wants to repair the dial and put it back in the watch.

Thank you everyone for your help. I will get my watch back & find a reputable certified Rolex repair facility to ask them regarding replacing my old dial with a new one or seal the old dial to avoid flaking. RSC NY is just out to get my money.

Im thinking they are discounting the new dial with a trade in of the old. Discount is prob 300. Id pay the 300( if its in useable shape ) and hold onto old dial and hands. You could prob sell those for well over 300

Yes. RSC NY told me the lume is flaking & it is affecting the movement. I serviced this watch 6 years ago at the same facility. My sub just stopped working. They told me that it is necessary to replace the dial or if I refuse they will not service my sub.

I agree. Pay to keep my own dial. This is ridiculous. Just like a ransom.
