Super jubilee discontinued. Why?

When Rolex released the new Datejust 36 this year at Baselworld much to my disgust they have decided on using a sporty oyster clasp on the jubilee bracelet just like the DJ 41 and new jubilee GMT Pepsi and are phasing out the beautiful super jubilee. Why oh why are they making dress watches with sports watch clasps on them it baffles me and makes them look worse IMO. In my mind a Datejust jubilee should have a beautiful continuous bracelet just like the presidential.

So I’ve been wanting a Datejust 36 for many years now and because of Baselworld and those new TT DJ’s with that new clasp I decided I needed to get myself a super jubilee before the SS ones are updated next year. So yesterday I went to my local AD in the UK and purchased a stainless steel and fluted bezel 116234. The salesperson told me this is the last one they have and they have now been discontinued already! (even though a replacement wasn’t even announced this year) and Rolex won’t let them order any more in.

I would love to hear your opinions on why Rolex are sabotaging such a good looking bracelet and do you think they will do the same to the presidential in a few years to come?

I’m just happy I was in the position to purchase a brand new super jubilee before they went. And also yes i can confirm it’s true.. AD’s do take the stickers off before you leave, they photocopy your ID, and the waiting lists are already closed on a lot of 2018 Basel releases already! I only mentioned the wait on a Hulk and he said “i appreciate you’re spending a lot of money with us today but you’re gonna need to spend a lot more to get on the waiting list for ANY sports models”. These AD’s in the UK have all the power these days.

Thanks for reading. Look forward to your replies

I think it all comes down to micro adjustment. Maybe too many complained to Rolex that they had issues wearing it in cold/warm environments when the wrist contracts/expands. I need the ability to adjust the bracelet when I walk in from 30 degree day into an 80 degree shopping center. My DJ41 Jubilee allows me the option.

Congrats. Which colour did you go for? I also didn't like the change at first, but then again the original DJ came with an oyster clasp as well.

Thanks. I did think it was due to that benefit. That is the only drawback of a super jubilee or presidential I suppose. I’ve never tried on a 3 point adjustable oyster clasp before.. I’ve owned a Submariner which has more finer adjustments and I even felt those 2mm increments were too extreme for my wrist. If the watch was too tight I’d adjust it by just 1 increment and it was too loose, I couldn’t win! On your clasp the increments are a much larger 5mm I believe. I don’t think I would ever use that feature if I had that clasp. Although that’s probably because I live in the UK and our temperatures are always a stable disappointment

I have a SS DJ36 fluted superjubilee, in my opinion is the most comfortable watch that I have ever used.
When I saw Basel new DJ what came to my mind was that they want to make the hidden clasp a premium feature to give additional reasons to upsell to DD.

I have both super jub and pcl oyster for my dj and the oyster is much more comfortable and feels sturdy. I also can’t get a perfect fit with my super jubilee even after I bought a 1.5 link so I have to wear it looser than I prefer to (better than being too tight). It’s inconvenient but you can’t argue that it’s a work of art with that hidden clasp and I think it’s worth the inconvenience.

I’m just glad I was able to source one before it got dced.

Super jubilee discontinued. Why?

I agree old style more beautiful than new style with clasp. There is an 1.25 lenght link available to allow fine tuning adjustment if someone is in between sizes. I use mine a bit loose so no issues in temperature changes (anyway am in the caribbean )

Congratulations on your new watch. I have no doubt it’s the easylink.

Horses for courses....I recently bought a DJ41 with my first ever jubilee. It was never an option for me before because I won’t consider a watch without easylink (or equivalent).

i would argue they are not dress watches. If they were then i would agree.

Micro adjustment like the others said is probably the practical reason.

I prefer the super jubilee, too. It’s so much more elegant and clever.

I don’t think it is an engineering impossibility to work some sort of adjustment feature into the super jubilee. I suspect they want to make the watch more sporty. The fashion today is sport.

OP: I was immediately disappointed with this too after the new DJ 36 was revealed! I’d been planning for my next baby to be a sub but feel pressured to also grab the 116234 before time runs out! The yellow gold version is also off the website... hoping the AD here in Florida doesn’t give me the same news...

Any oystercase isn’t a dress watch IMO.

A Day-Date is a dress watch IMO (especially on a factory leather strap) and the Datejust is just a more affordable variant of that. Obviously every Rolex can be worn 24/7 and withstand what life throws at them whether they are sporty or dressy. I can’t say the same for every brand, I wouldn’t like to wear a thin dressy PP or Cartier as a daily for 50 years for example

Micro adjustment is really the only thing I can think of as well. The super jubilee is so nice! I was able to source one recently for my LVc/BLNR and I can't get enough of it. Its beautiful!

The datejust and day-date are dressier versions of a sportswatch, making them perfect to dress up or down...but still not a dress watch.

Therefor the oysterclasp makes perfect sense on the jubilee IMO.

I might be a minority here but I don’t like the super jubilee! Looks like a woman’s bracelet to me! Not very manly to me imho

I’m sure glad I picked up a 116233 a few years ago.
